イギリスのシンガーソングライターの2012年以来のセカンドスタジオアルバム、本作でUKチャート自身初の１位を獲得しています。サウンドはソウルが軸になっていて、ブルース、フォークのテイストもあります。オープニングトラックの“ Cold little heart ”が約10分、タイトルトラックの“ Love & hate ”が約7分など、歌唱部分だけではなく演奏部分が長い曲もあり、ギターやストリングスのサウンドも聴かせてくれます。味わいのあるボーカルに、彼自身のルーツから生まれた切実さも混じり合い、伝わるメッセージは非常に力強さがあります。“ One more night ”はスタンダードな演奏がじわじわと迫ってくるようなブルース、“ Black man in a white world ”はマイノリティーが抱える古くて新しいテーマを綴っています。“愛”と“憎”、対極でありながら常に共存しているテーマがタイトルになっている作品。特に移民の流入を嫌い、国民投票によってEU離脱を決定した国で、両親が移民のアーティストがトップになる現象は何だか不思議な気もするし、同時にうれしい気持ちにもなります。
