Does it convert from VHS to DVD ?

Will it play the dvds that have been copies for vhs to the DVD’s play on any dvd machine?

What type of blank DVD should I use to record from VHS tape? And will this recorded DVD play in any DVD player?

You have to buy DVD-R, I purchased 100 Taiyo Yuden/JVC 8X DVD-R 4.7GB Silver Thermal Lacquer. Amazon has them at a great price $32.50 for 100 DVD's they work well. You have to finalize the disc and it will play in any DVD player.

Not only does it play VCR tapes but it up-converts them and, different than most combo boxes, all through a single HDMI cable so no changing inputs to watch DVDs and VCR tapes. It also can copy them to DVD if you prefer moving them to that more permanent media for posterity. Hope that helps!

what kind of external tuner is needed to be able to record tv shows onto the dvd-r discs? I currently have a cable line coming into an older tv set.

Fortunately, still had a working VCR, which I hooked up between HDTV and the Funai. To set timer record function on Funai, turn on TV, set to channel to record, turn on VCR to channel 3, push timer on Funai remote, and set program. TV may now be turned off, but VCR must remain on, as well as Funai on with timer function set. This works well if you have a spare tv, because you can only watch and record one channel at a time. Still looking for a device called "external tuner" as described in the owners manual. Also, look for the factory reman version of the Funai, much better deal.
