how is this different from older heavy Yamaha receiver models, let's say from 15-20 years ago, regarding sound quality ?

My.old Yamaha RXV 995 absolutely killed this Denon. The Yamaha rocked the block the Denon doesn't even annoy the neighbors.

What is the standby power consumption of the 5000X? Anyone measured?

120 watts at 8ohms, all five channels driven. The crossover is 20hz. 180 watts at 4ohms, all five channels driven. And Amazon doesn't really provide much information about it, because this is a budget power amplifier at $789 with $70.99 shipping. But if you would like to go all out, like me, doing complete separates with some real amplifiers and a separate AV processor, I would personally recommend you the Sunfire TGA-7401 7-Channel Power Amplifier. It has a powerhouse of 200 watts @ 8ohms for all 7 channels driven, and 400 watts @ 4ohms for 2 channels driven. It's actually one of the best sounding amplifiers that I've heard for under $2,500. And I would recommend you the Anthem AVM70 15.2 channel AV processor for under $3,499.

Should i turn my x3700h 7.2 into a prepro? liking that class a/b wattsrms...

Up to you. I am using my Onkyo 656 as a prepro, and it works okay, some problems with using some of the hdmi inputs for things other than what they are labeled for, but I think that just the Onkyo. Don't know about your x3700h.
