Q: I just received my stone and it is not clear if you only use one side or if both sides can be used? One side has writing and the other side does not.

I use the unwritten side because I like to see the writing unscathed. BUT...... it makes no difference which side one uses.

Q: Is this the same stone as the shapton kuromaku professional series 8000?

It is the Kuromaku 0710 stone, sold elsewhere on Amazon for much more, but appears to be the same product. I bought this one and am very happy with it, although most knives do not need this fine a polish. Note that this is not the 50203 model of the Shapton Glass Stones, which does cost more. I personally feel the Kuromaku line is as reliable as the Shapton Glass line.

Q: Will this work to finish a super steel such as magnacut, or is the abrasive not hard enough?

Yea the Shapton 8K will work on ANY steel. A few things. Are you using this 8K as your finish stone? And your not in a hurry. A hard steel if very dull i would start on a diamond plate. Then work my way up. If you finish on this stone you will have a nice mirror polished edge.
