Q: What is mushroom spawn?

Spawn is the living fungal culture, called mycelium, grown onto a substrate. It provides the backbone to any mushroom growing operation. Think of it as the equivalent of seeds for a mushroom farm.

Q: How is North Spore sawdust spawn produced?

North Spore produces 100% of its spawn at its facility in Portland, Maine. Spawn is produced in-house in our laboratory on millet and wheat berries and then mixed into a sawdust-based substrate and allowed to myceliate the substrate.

Q: Which other mushroom species can I grow in beds?

Wine cap, nameko, chestnut, oyster, blewit, almond agaricus, and morel will all grow in beds.

Q: How long can I store my sawdust spawn

With the exception of almond agaricus, spawn will last 6 months to a year in the fridge, but the sooner you use it the better. Store almond agaricus spawn at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and use within 6 months.

Q: How much spawn do I need?

One 5.5 lb bag of wine cap spawn is enough to inoculate a 16 square foot bed.
