Georgia O’Keeffe: To See Takes Time

I have become a fan of Georgia O'Keeffe and her wonderful paintings and drawings. This book of some of her works plus her comments is invaluable in getting to really know her as a person. This book is out of print so I felt especially lucky to have found a used version on Amazon. Many of her famous paintings are included. I believe that reading O'Keeffe's own writing along with some of her biographies really provides insight into her personality and art work.

I have owned this book before, but don't know where it ended up, yet I needed it as a gift for a dear friend, who is not aware of Georgia O'Keeffe, but paints flowers with very close to the same mastery. Knowing of this work is a missing link for her and I can hardly wait to share it to see her reaction to the mentor she never had or the sensual flower sister she didn't know was out there...P.S. I should mention that the book dealer did not misrepresent the condition of this used book. In fact, it was in much better shape than I was expecting. So...they are a book dealer I would trust when buying a used book from their inventory and relying on their assessment of condition...

This catalogue focuses more on O’Keeffe’s watercolors, pastels, and charcoals rather than her oils. Earlier work focuses on subjects and settings other than the southwest. I continue to use this book for reference as I develop my own work. A great addition to my collection of books and catalogues from O’Keeffe.

This book was described as showing very little wear, but it actually appears never to have been opened and enjoyed. It is yellowed with age and there are some cracks in the cover's glazed finish (likely due to my mail carrier rolling it to stick in my neighbor's mailbox!!), but it has apparently never been opened based on the condition of the spine.

I wish the printing of the images was better — lighter and clearer. Perhaps if the pages were shinier or glossier this might have improved the printing. For some reason there is a trend lately in books to print on uncoated and not smooth paper. It takes away from the experience of reading a good book.

Print quality is excellent. Author covered the subject well.

The value of this book consists of 2 things: 1) beautiful images of Okeefe paintings and 2) Her comments about the paintings allow you to see what she was thinking and feeling as she painted. I found this great to read while also reading a biography of Keefe

I've been a huge fan of O'Keeffe's work for decades. Occasionally, I would come across images of her watercolors which I found very beautiful and, as a watercolorist myself, wanted to see more of. Alas, they do not seem to be easy to find. When I found this book, I though "finally!" Unfortunately, unless you are an art historian looking to discover details of O'Keeffe's process, too many of the images in this book are mediocre in their own right; they do not stand on their own as art. I know I am blaspheming in some people's opinions, but that is what I think. Too many images are obviously preliminary, not to mention early student-days, studies that lack the power of conveying the "poetry of things" found in her best works.

This review of her work exhibited at MOMA assisted me in visiting the Montreal, Canada exhibit. A 12 in. x 12 . the book was full of great pictures and explanations of O'Keeffe's career. Recommend you buy this if you are interested in her art. Surely there are other books with a more in-depth critique - this one is readable.
