Why do they tell you that is made in America and then when you get it it says made in China maybe that's just a printing error

I didn’t pay attention to that. Doesn’t matter since it’s not touching the food. Super strong and very handy tool. To pick up lid and rest lid on top of it !!

Would anyone recommend purchasing this item for use at home? In other words, do you use it with your dutch oven, when taking it out of the oven?

I agree with previous posts. It would be like using a cannon when a pistol would do! I would simply use potholders, but I would not use the this dutch oven in my gas oven at home.

What is the top metal bar, near the handle, for?

Not really sure. I wrapped my fingers around it when using it. Also, note that the metal above the bar is twisted. That twist ends on the bar, so it may be just part of the design.

Made in China

This is made in China. It only has of Lodge the name. Any other lid lifter will be cheaper and of similar quality. I only buy Lodge (made in USA) or Skepshult (made in Sweden) cast iron, never Chinese. With that prixe, I was expecting that it was Lodge from the USA, but it is not. Otherwise it is smaller than expected, but it is just OK.

Plastic coating - how long will that last?

Although this is quite useful, it's coated in a horrible plastic and weirdly made in China. Although it bears the Lodge tag, its Not really the lodge quality product I've come to expect.
