Q: What drive is in the casing?

It's an OEM drive, in my case it identifies itself as WDC WD20SMRW-59YNDS0. Couldn't find anything online when I searched, but it's a 5400rpm drive so definitely the "black" here is pure marketing. As are performances, I assume it has a bit of cache as I could reach the claimed speeds on a drive benchmark test, but in normal use speeds are just on par with any external 5400rpm disk.

Q: Is there any physical difference between the pc and xbox versions? is it faster and more reliable than the wd my book?

Not really physical but this version is not given as pc compatible, so it may have a specific firmware or drive formatting. You're not likely to see major speed differences with other external drives. This may have some cache given the declared speeds, but this drives serie is mostly a commercial gimmick around a gaming aura. With a 7200rpm disk you're likely to see sustained averages of 70-80mb/s. Reliability.. Again, no. For reliability consider a nas or maybe the my book duo with red-serie disks. For single-disk and both speed and storage look for a 10k rpm disk, you may have to pick disk and enclosure separately. Single disk speed = external ssd, the cheapest will be at least 4x times faster than this one but storage space will come with a big price premium

Q: can this be used with a pc/laptop or is this made for just xbox?

I've not used it with a PC, but the data sheet says it's compatible with Windows 8.1 and 10, so I don't see why not. It's not the cheapest or fastest portable drive available, but for an Xbox owner, the (limited availability) 2 month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate voucher made it a good offer.
