Yes, this salinity refractometer can measure salt water or salinity of water, ideal for aquariums and marine monitoring. It's accurate.

Q: when calibrating to 0, what counts as distilled or fresh water?

After doing some research, apparently you don’t want to calibrate to 0. The reason for the 35ppt calibration fluid is it will lose accuracy the further away you get away from the calibration level. So you want to calibrate as close to the level that you plant to use it at as possible.
