What was Westone Thinking?
Took me a while to decide to write this because I realize Westone is a very successful company and has gotten that way with their design strategy. This design strategy it seems, among other things, favors intentionally "tuning" the sound of different headphone models to certain tastes. I am not therefore going to rate these headphones based on the turning decisions that Westone made; that's personal preference and subjective. That being said, I believe there are certain things that are hallmarks of a good speaker design. In the case of a speaker, such as the B30, that places emphases on lower frequencies that hallmark must include the ability to deliver those lower with good transient response. Failure to do so delivers bass that sounds like a muddy mess. Ever hear those cars with the sub woofers in them "bah-bah-boom-boom-boom-bah-bah boom" ...and on and on until the cars sounds like it will be shaken apart? That is an extreme example of a speaker system that emphasizes low frequencies with TERRIBLE transient response. The B30 don't sound like that; they do not have *terrible* transient response. They do however, in my opinion, have *really bad* transient response. Now I understand it's hard to design a small speaker (i.e., headphones) with good transient response in the lower frequencies. To do so you need to move a lot of air quickly and stop moving that air quickly: that is really, really hard to do with a small speaker (i.e., headphones). But come on: it's Westone! They could have done better than this. Way better. How do I know? Because other IEM can deliver lower frequencies with really good transient response. The HIDIZS MS4 (for $120 less) is an example. What's worse, bad transient response can't be corrected with equalization. You are much better off buying IEMs designed with *less* emphasis in the lower frequencies and good transient response in those frequencies. Why? Because with that combo you can you use an equalizer to boost the low frequencies you want and have excellent "bass head" sound.

Best sounding in-ears I've ever heard
Definitively Westone never fails to deliver. I own the UM1 and AM-Pro 10 in-ears which I use for our band rehearsals and live performance, and the B50s aren't supposed to be for either live performance or rehearsals, but the sound is so rich and full of detail that I can't use anything else now. I'm spoiled. I know I'll have to ask the house mixer to bring down bass EQ a bit on my feed, but I'll get used to it. It comes with a Bluetooth cable, so I can use it for my daily walk and gym sessions. Is weatherproof as well, so it's a complete package by itself. Yes is expensive, or let's say, costly, but you get what you pay for. If you want state of the art sound, crystal clear details, superb and punchy bass, not a single shred of distortion, even at full volume, look no further. You won't be disappointed. But, as with all Westone products, a good fit is crucial. Surprisingly enough this appears to be not so critical for this particular model. I mean, a simple silicon plug can deliver enough sound quality that you won't believe what you are hearing, but once you find the eartip that fits your ear canal shape, the experience will be out of this world. Is that good.I've been using it for several days, simply jogging around the block, or doing band rehearsals, and I'm still amazed how these in-ears handle high volumes with no distortion whatsoever. The bass response is incredible. Trebles are subtle and crystal clear, and not screamingly harsh, as many so-called higher response earphones. I'd say that the Frequency Response is clear but powerful. Highs are subtle but precise, and bass is punchy but comfortable.I truly believe you won't find finer audiophile in-ears in the market.Oh, I almost forgot, it also comes with exchangeable plates, so I can now use the Orange plate for the right ear and the Black plate for the left, so I'll never have to guess again which one is it. Smart move, Westone!
