Q: How come makita doesnt sell hex bits separately?. of course i broke my 5/64 and now looks like i get to buy another complete set. drat.

I’ve been selling Makita tools since 1995. Makita isn’t in the business of selling bits and blades. They buy those and put their name on it. You can buy individual bits. Irwin is one brand. I sell those too. Just make sure you get an impact bit. Those are way more sturdy than non impact bits. Hope this helps.

Q: Are the hex shafts steel or something else ? Will a magnetic chuck hold them ?

The hex shafts are steel and a magnetic chuck will hold them.

Q: Can you use these to drill holes in drywall safely?

Yes you can safely, however you should probably use a masonry bit. These will dull out quickly and will end up being useless for drilling other materials in the future. Look at the :DEWALT Masonry Drill Bit Set, Percussion, Concrete & Block, 7-Piece (DW5207) on Amazon for drilling into drywall or something similar.

Q: Is there a specific way I should be taking the drill bits out of the case?

Either side of the case will pivot up towards you, like on a hinge. Once you swing them so they are pointing up, just grab the bit you want and pull straight up and the bit should slide right out of the case. Be careful, they are sharp.

Sharp bits....

Usual Makita quality. The bits are well-made and drill fast, accurate holes. As they are titanium nitride coated they should be wear resistant and last a long time.

Drills are fine, Hex Shank not so good!

These drills work fine until the first time they catch. The fixing in the Hex Shank is disturbed when the drill bit jams and the drill is never true again. I have seen this with cheaper Hex Shank drills but expected better from Makita.
