You have to program it to use remote Options 1 thermostat only 2 remote only. 3 average between the 2 You need to follow manual

This is a very simple device. It's a thermistor in a box. Absolutely must be wired if you want it to work.

Q: Is there some kind of backplate I can use with this? I have one, but I need a backplate to cover the screw holes where the thermostat used to be.

You could use any suitable blank wall switch cover as a back plate. I assume you have a compatible digital thermostat at another location. This unit is thermistor sensor only. Be sure to seal the wire hole to stop air infiltration.
