Oblivion is a groundbreaking cinematic event starring Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, the lone security repairman stationed on a desolate, nearly-ruined future Earth. When he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft, her arrival triggers a nonstop chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows, and leaves humanity's fate in his hands. Academy Award(R)-winner Morgan Freeman joins Cruise in this "visually stunning" (Pete Hammond, Movieline), explosive story from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Earth is still his home
Here is Tom Cruise's latest movie in a single sentence: It's "WALL-E" with a heavy dose of "Moon" and "Total Recall," and a touch of "The Matrix" and/or "Terminator."If you've seen these movies -- and most other sci-fi from the last thirty years -- "Oblivion" will seem oddly familiar. Admittedly, being derivative isn't necessarily a death blow to a movie. But being dull and spiritless is -- and while director Joseph Kosinski crafts a truly beautiful, brilliant post-apocalyptic world to play in, he never crafts a story or characters half as interesting.Sixty years ago, an alien invasion was repelled... but not before they destroyed the moon... which seems to have just made Earth temporarily inhospitable rather than permanently lifeless. The human race has evacuated to Titan, and the only ones left are a "clean-up crew" who live in an iHouse high in the clouds, and use drones to exterminate the alien "scavs."WALL-E... sorry, I mean Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is regularly sent out to repair drones, but he's more interested in the ruined remnants of human civilization. But one day he finds cryo-pods from a crashed ship, and barely manages to save one of the survivors, Julia (Olga Kurylenko) -- whom he recognizes from half-recalled memories. While trying to help her out, Jack stumbles across a small band of surviving humans, led by Beech (Morgan Freeman) -- and he finds that they are planning to blow up the TET, a human space station. When Jack refuses, Beech sends him off on a quest to discover the truth rather than... well, just telling him what's going on.Joseph Kosinski has only done two movies, but he's already developing a distinct style: bland story and gorgeous visuals. "Oblivion" is a truly beautiful movie, with sweeping views of an Earth that has been completely devastated, but is slowly being reclaimed by nature. The only oasis is the cold, sterile iHouse, set in a perpetually rosy cloudbank atop a slender pillar. It leaves you thinking that Kosinski has dreamed up designs for the entire planet, and just wants to tour his postapocalyptic world.Unfortunately, the plot is a Frankenstein's monster of other sci-fi movies. Almost everything in this movie has been done better elsewhere, either directly ripping it off ("Moon") or in cliche form (oh dearie me, what IS the connection between Julia and Jack?). And there's no passion or energy behind anything that happens -- it all feels bland and generic. And Kosinski is just awful at expositing anything that ISN'T ripped off from those other movies. Major plot twists flew directly over my head because of how blandly they were revealed -- for example, the big reveal involving the TET.Sadly the characters are just as bland and generic as the story. Tom Cruise is basically playing the Generic Tom Cruise Action Hero here -- a good, morally-upright guy who has some murky stuff in his past. Even the character's NAME sounds like a GTCAH name. Cruise gives a decent performance, but he's definitely not stepping outside his action-hero box -- and the character is so blandly nondescript he probably couldn't even if he wanted to.None of these characters have pasts, quirks, other relationships, or anything to really flesh them out -- they're as blandly uninteresting as the plot.. Kurylenko is pretty awful, Freeman is phoning it in, and Melissa Leo and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau aren't given enough to do. The only really good performance is Andrea Riseborough as Harper's lover/partner, who is made pretty miserable by his attraction to Julia. But alas, she also is not given much to do, and is gotten rid of when she becomes inconvenient."Oblivion" is a visually entrancing movie, but the Frankenstein plot left me feeling empty and bored. Directed by someone other than Kosinski, it might have been an astounding film... but instead we just get a bland, forgettable one.
