"The King is in the altogether but altogether the altogether he's altogether as naked as the day that he was born..."
DANNY KAYE Sings Selections from "Hans Christian Anderson" (DL 78479) recreates Frank Loesser songs he performed in that 1952 motion picture. DECCA's "enhanced for STEREO" album has a slight added echo that fades toward one channel. On the title piece and all Side One cuts (rec. 8/52), Danny is accompanied by Gordon Jenkins and orchestra."Anywhere I Wander" is a beautiful romantic ballad delicately performed by Danny & chorus. For "Inchworm," a female chorus replaces the children heard in the film doing "2 and 2 are 4," etc. Later, their disinterested addition table chant becomes counterpoint to Kaye's lead vocal. Jane Wyman ably duets with Danny on "No Two People." A definite highlight is "The King's New Clothes," a whimsical song translation of one of Anderson's most famous stories. The two Tubby Tuba works on Side Two have music by George Kleinsinger, story and lyrics by Paul Tripp. From 1963 to '67, Tripp hosted BIRTHDAY HOUSE, a weekday morning "live" kiddie show on WNBC-4, out of NYC.Kaye recorded the 1945 debut of "Tubby the Tuba." This LP has the 5/19/47 remake of what is both a study of orchestral instruments and a clever way to reach out to children who might feel alienated, "different" or unloved. Tubby's gorgeous minor key melody is given to him by a singing bullfrog. Here, Danny narrates and provides all voices, backed by Victor Young's concert orchestra."Tubby at the Circus" (rec. 8/18/50) has him experimenting with different jobs, like walking a tightrope. A wise elephant supplies the moral that our tuba friend should just "be yourself.""Uncle Pockets" and "Hole in the Bottom of the Sea," both recorded 11/26/51 with a studio orchestra and chorus, have nonsense lyrics fashioned expressly for Kaye by his wife, Sylvia Fine. We learn in the first that there's nothing Uncle doesn't have in his magic pockets. "Hole" is a fast patter song where the single lyric line gets longer with each repetition.SIDE ONE[2:34] Hans Christian Anderson - w/chorus & orch.[3:12] Anywhere I Wander - w/chorus & orch.[3:02] The Ugly Duckling - w/orch.[3:10] Inchworm - w/female chorus & orch.[1:46] Thumbelina - w/chorus & orch.[2:23] No Two People - w/Jane Wyman & orch.[3:30] The King's New Clothes - w/mixed chorus & orch.[2:04] Wonderful Copenhagen - w/chorus & orch.SIDE TWO[8:50] Tubby the Tuba - musical fable w/orch.[9:00] Tubby the Tuba at the Circus - story w/sound effects & orch.[2:39] Uncle Pockets - w/chorus & orch.[2:27] There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea - w/chorus & orch.TOTAL TIME: 44:37
