Fast trains!
This is a book for everyone's inner child, with a history of the development of high speed technology, be it in Europe, the U.S., Japan, or even Australia. Well, since the author, Peter Clark, hails from the land down under, this is to be expected, but aside from the chapter "Considerations for HSR in Australia" you'd hardly even notice. And I mean it in the best positive light, since this mechanical engineer turned writer produced one of the best, more international reaching, books on fast speed trains I've ever seen! Well, to hell with that, this one's the best, probably not with the most information (I found one in Japan which was excellent, but the book was all about Japanese trains, so even a translated version wouldn't best this one, in my mind), but definitely very accessible, full of nice photographs (most of them at the train station, but that helps to paint the whole picture), and well laid, very understandable text, even for us who, like me, are interested mostly because, well, trains (need to explain more? ;).

The World of High Speed Trains and the Australia of Other Passenger Trains
This is a very good overview of high speed rail systems around the world. It includes a discussion of all Australian passenger train services; this is irrelevant to most readers outside Australia, but may have been necessary in order to get the book published.

Comprehensive Detailed Look at High Speed Trains Around the World
This glossy picture book is entertaining, informative, and affordable. Readers get a discount ride on high speed trains running round the world. The color shots are stunning!Missing in action are interior photos exposing the inside story. I especially like to see people mix and mingling in cafe bar car.Way too many pages are devoted to Australia which - like the USA - lacks any true high speed rail lines or trains.

Great value and Comprehensive
Peter Clark's book has the look and feel of a coffee table hardcover, but it is much more than this. After giving a comprehensive summary of the history of the quest for speed on the railways of Britain, the United States, France and Japan, it details the present situation of high speed railways throughout the world. The technological challenges to high speed railways are covered. For each country, there are full technical details of all high speed train types, going right back to the 1964 original "bullet trains" of Japan. This is a mine of information for any contemporary train affectionardo, and is current right up to 2010. Clark in a mechanical engineer from Australia, and he includes sections on proposals for high speed railways there, and details on any trains in Australia which might occasionally operate at speed approaching "fast". This book has plenty of color photographs and at an Australian price of $40, is exceptional value in Australia and good value anywhere.
