Look Smarter Than You Are with Hyperion Planning: An Administrator's Guide

Excellent, methodical presentation of how to apply Planning
I found this book to be extremely helpful. The authors methodically walk you through the creation of a Planning application using the Classical approach. Roske and McMullen show you how to apply the product by creating a solution. If you are an Essbase developer looking to add Planning to your skill set, this book will get you there. In regard to the "BackButton Single Star" review, yes, the humor is corny but I respectfully submit that your review overlooks the value of the book. The book is actually fun to follow because the authors take great care not to lose you along the way. If you don't care for the humor, skip the first paragraph of each chapter and you will be just fine. Roske and McMullen are authorities on the subject and if their "Eddie and the Consultants: A System 9 Musical" should ever come to New York, corny humor aside, I for one would sleep on the sidewalk for front row seats. I hope they decide to write a humorous book covering Hyperion Financial Management (HFM).

Humor Detracts Tremendously--Not Funny, Silly, and Clouds the Instruction
The authors tried to introduce humor into the topic, and this is the major failing of this book. The humor is silly and over the top, and very distracting, and reader needs to try too hard to ignore it to get to the substance.Humor in computer books is nice, but should not be overboard, as it is here. John Wallenbach has humor in his computer books, but he is a good writer, and the humor is light and appropos, and adds to the content and message. Not so here. To be kind, it is overboard, to be less kind, it is silly and absurd. Seems like authors are using this book as a forum to showcase their silly humor rather than to teach the subject. One gets the impression that authors are themselves bored with the subject and are frivolous, but want to make money with another book that rehashes some the the content in other books. The Kindle version is not formatted well--with pagination off, and difficult to follow, even without the humor.Authors are credentialed authorities on the subject--should stick to it, and remove the silly humor, then this book may have some merit--but as it is, it is hard to tell with the pervasive humor clouding the presentation. Authors are not as good writers as others to begin with--especially vis-a-vis someone like John Wallenbach.Hard to imagine that such a silly approach got accepted for publication. Definitely detracts. A glaring example of the bad use or misuse of humor--ergo this cannot be considered a serious book. Too bad. Really disappointed. Don't waste your money. Their other book was OK.

Good overall indtorduction
The book highlights a number of requirements for a Planning and Budgeting Project and sets about solving these issues. However I was expecting something a little more technical.

Probably the best book for Hyperion Planning
Detailed and accurate information in a crisp and clear manner. The official oracle guides are way too much confusing when compared with this.
