Great tone for blues leads but too Fat and Fuzzy for chords.
I bought this specifically for bluesy leads and riffs. I have the SD Cool Rails in the Neck position on my strat. It sounds great for leads, loads of fun to Jam out some blues for hours, but it sucks for chords. When ever I try and play chords with gain, it's just so Fat, Warm and Fuzzy that it sounds like a mess and just sucks. But the leads sound sweet. Also It was easy to install.

Nice
I've been a believer in Duncan's stacks since the very first generation of stacked single coils came out in the early 1980's. I still have a set installed in my '76 strat. I paired two of these with a cool rail in the bridge. The impedance between these and the cool rails are similar, and as I expected so are the volumes. STK-S7 is 11.9K and the cool rails is 10.6K. the cool rails in the bridge is reminiscent of a pearly gates humbucker, fatter and warmer than the stacks but not fully PAF fat. The stacks are hot but maintain the crispness and clarity of a single coil without the nasty hum when your gain is high. I play blues with a rock edge and find this combination to be great for my requirements. These are much better sounding than fender's noiseless offerings with a more natural and balanced tone. They have a clearer low midrange than the area 57 or area 61 dimarzios, and better high end than the virtual vintage blues (either model)

SD Cool Rails is...okay, I'm still experimenting with it
I was all starry-eyed with this pickup when I got it. Advertised as a cleaner, brighter version of the hot rails, I've found this pickup to be pretty dark and having a lot of mid drive, although it's smooth. It does translate some sparkle but it's more akin to a weird vintage PAF sound than strat singles...It's too fat for neck duties IMO. I only used it in series, or split(which I loved but was too low output), but I'm going to give it a new life as middle pickup, with a vintage rails in the neck and hot rails bridge. These rails NEED series/parallel switching, it really frees up some strattier tones in parallel. I've already used the cool rails neck/vintage rails middle combo, and the VR is actually hotter than the CR when compared in series. The tone of the VR wired series in the neck slot is similar to, but very slightly hotter and more strat-like than this Cool Rails. So, my version of the set will go, VR neck, CR mid, HR bridge. Also, I generally do not use tone controls and will try using a single 1 Meg ohm master volume pot with a treble bleed circuit. Both VR and CR were a little dark wth a 500k, so I'm looking for that Dimarzio sparkle in these otherwise awesome Duncan rails, if that makes sense to you ;)

SUPER VERSATILE
This pickup is awesome. I can get great classic rock and blues tones out of it. I have this paired up with a hot rails in the bridge of my Fender American made standard Stratocaster and I can get an array of wicked sounds. Distorted this pickup has a warm smooth vintage tone, when played through a clean channel this pickup sounds very articulate and clean, but not super clean. It has a pinch of dirtiness to it. When playing single notes it has a very bubbly and clear sound. This pickup is definitely not a one trick pony. You can get great sounds for many styles

Great tone, bad wiring.
While the tone was great in my strat, the wiring job was so bad one of the coils cut out. My guitar tech tried many work arounds but I ended up returning it. I'm not sure if this was Seymour Duncan's fault or the distributor I bought it from. Very dissapointed.
