This book was published in July 2009, and based upon 25 years of observations as a gastroenterologist in private practice. On September 17, 2021, I co-published an article in Cureus J of Med Science, a peer reviewed journal, demonstrating the dramatic impact of this high fiber diet (as discussed in my book) in a patient with severe gastroparesis with an estimated cost savings of $125,000 annually.Today, one change in the book that I would make is that about 1/2 the amount of maximum amount of fiber recommended in my book and by the manufacturers should be sufficient for most patients.Additionally, I received the following recommendations AFTER my book was published and for this reason I have them to the Amazon website. I feel that their recommendations should more than offset most of the negative reviews. These recommendations include area physicians including UNC and Raleigh as well as a dietitian. And if dietitians do not understand healthy fiber intake, there is a major problem in our country:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dr. Wes Jones continues the tradition of the commonsense approach to medical problems as espoused by the late Dr. Denis Burkitt. Your bowels will be healthy, not just empty.
I am a FEW DAYS into the week-by-week program, and I've already had a nice long one after weeks of not defecating very often. And when I did go before, it wasn't very much. After switching to a high vegetable/fat, moderate protein diet last month, I stopped defecating on a consistent basis. This didn't make sense to me, given that supposedly vegetables are high in fiber, and ought to aid in digestion, right? Wrong. In the first chapter of Dr. Jones' book, he points out that vegetables are actually NOT that high in the fiber that may aid in digestion, hence the reason my bowels are stopped up, despite the healthy changes. Here was something I hadn't known before, so I continued to read on.Although there is dispute as to the effectiveness of the fiber approach for constipation, it does work for many. But it IS possible to take too much, further exacerbating the issue at hand. That being said, not only has Jones put together a detailed week-by-week fiber therapy program (exact amounts of fiber necessary per week, the best fiber supplements, and the healthiest types of laxatives), but he also has constructed it with the goal in mind to PERMANENTLY strengthen the bowels. Some of Jone's patients, as illustrated through his periodic anecdotes, have managed to ween off of their daily/weekly laxatives after working through his program. A lot of these patients, of all ages, had dealt with constipation for months or years on end up until working with him.The secret lies in how much or little fiber to take at a time, and when it is time to incorporate a laxative (even on a daily basis). Jones explains how to judge these necessary measures, and by following the program this way, your bowels will be healthy, not just empty. This is in accordance with what Jones has said in his book (and he explains the how/why behind everything)Jone's writing style is engaging, a bit humorous, and he shares some medical knowledge without boring mumbo-jumbo. I finished the book in a few hours, and given that he provided the name of EVERY recommended fiber supplement/laxative, it was easy to jump right into the program. I did, and I had a nice defecation the next morning.

It Worked
First let me say that I have suffered from irritable bowl syndrome for a few years now. MISERABLE years. I'd pretty much just giving up on putting any heavy food in my system more than once a day because eating only led to being stopped up which made me feel sick. I'm only on week one and I feel so much better. I am ecstatic. I sleep better, I feel better at work and best of all I am not afraid of food anymore. I'm starting to think this guy might actually have something. I mean, three days and this kind of progress? No doctor has been able to do that for me.And it doesn't make me feel weak or dehydrated as I feared. Being on the milk of magnesia is actually great. Sure, it tastes awful, but it's a lot more gentle than some other products I'm tried that give you horrible cramps and gas.My stomach feels good and I am not suffering inside my own body anymore. I say give this a try. If any of you are like me, you've already been to the doctor and spent more than you'll spend on this book. Go for it. You really have nothing to lose....(ok maybe that was a bad example.)
