a classic of its kind
Without doubt this is an important and classic work , a must for all who want or need to know more than the current negative famine, drought and poverty driven image Ethiopia and its peoples suffer throughout the world media. If you want to know why Ethiopia is a great country with a rich history and an amazing variety of cultures and languages, if you want to know why so may people fall in love with this country this book is for you. The serious student of Ethiopian peoples will by all probability already know and appreciate this classic volume.

Cursory but Useful
Pankhurst writes a nice readable book. The work is a bit shallow on the treatment of a variety of subjects but it is survey so that is expected. It reads well for a reader who is just approaching the subject but anyone with a more than passing interest in the book will likely want something a bit more substantial.
