A HISTORY COLLECTIBLE!!
I remembered watching Roots, by Alex Haley, back in the seventies. It was breath taking, tear jerking and triumphant, and some relief of knowing that as a people, God refuse to allow a total extinction. It defines the struggles of my Great Race of People and how another groups of people were dishonoring God and His love for all. Those people failed the test and through time the others prevailed and continue to strive. If one would like to show a new generation of Africans and African Americans the ugliest truth about how being hated for the color of your skin and being different this is a good start and a reason to want to strive. Only in America!!!!!

Everyone Should See It
I was a young child when this aired originally, but I've never seen it until now. So far I've only watched the first DVD, but I will make time each week to finish the whole series. I've always known Levar Burton was in it, but wow, he was so young! Of course I remember him from Reading Rainbow and then later on Star Trek, the Next Generation. But to my surprise, there were so many other stars - John Amos, Cicely Tyson, a very young Maya Angelou, Lou Gossett... oh my goodness, even celebrities that I haven't seen yet but I read about in the cast list like Robert Reed and Sandy Duncan, plus so many more. I had no idea they were in Roots. Now for the subject matter, it is hard to watch at times, but it is part of our history. Just watching the first DVD, I cried a few times. I don't think I will ever understand how anyone in history, no matter how long ago, could ever think that was ok. It is definitely a very ugly part of our history, but something that we should not forget about, just like the Holocaust. I agree with another reviewer in that it should be shown in school, but I could see that causing problems - meaning with acquiring parental permission due to the nudity (although natural) and of course the violence portrayed. One last thing, as far as my set of DVD's, at one part the sound was not timed properly with the way their mouths moved, but it didn't last too long. Maybe my DVD was defective. If I have anything else to add after I finish the whole series, I'll repost.
