Excellent First Entry in a Very Promising Series
This is a great series for readers who have a deep interest in Maya archaeology. You don't have to be an expert to enjoy this first book, but it is geared toward readers who have more than a passing interest in the subject. The photos are beautifully reproduced, particularly the details of recently-discovered paintings studied with new methodology; this article is strictly photos without text. Other articles/reports are a probably too specialized for readers with less intensive interest in the subject as they deal with interpreting iconography and trophy (animal bones) deposits. An article on a very recently discovered/studied site is excellent. This first volume is about 100 pages. Volume 2, which will be released in May of 2013, is nearly 150. They can be a bit pricey for books that are smaller than coffee table size (but larger than regular hardcover book size) and of so few pages. The price, however, is about $15 at the Mesoamerican Press web site.Fascinating for readers with an intense interest in the subject, but a bit much, both technically and price-wise, for readers with a passing interest.

They are beautiful, however
This is an expensive book because of the first rate photographs that are in it. They are beautiful, however. I bought it for an article with photos of the murals at San. Bartolo Guatemala. The photographs were remarkable and made the book worth the price.Other articles in the book were also interesting, and were well-illustrated. The book is one of a series of books that contain articles and photos about Mayan archeology. Because of its high cost, it is probably not for the casual reader. I'm a "nut" about Mayan archeology, so it was worth the price for me.

Maya Archaeology 1
A new series with nice surprises. Very useful for those researchers interested in details of one of the famous PreClassic San Bartolo murals. The second article deals with strontium isotope composition analysis of human remains in Punta de Chimino, Guatemala. Hunting shrines around Guatemala's Lake Atitlan is a good ethnological contribution. The dawn of archaeological research at Plan de Ayutla, Chiapas, give us interesting settlement and architectonic findings. The fifth article about Piedras Negras, Guatemala, painted lithic artifacts will move researchers to pay more attention to their artifacts. Finally, a well documented text referring to offering bowls from today's and yesterday's Mesoamerica.

Excellent photos and articles.
Excellent series. First rate, knowledgeable articles on the most recent archaeology. In this edition, drop-dead gorgeous and on-point accurate photos of the best and most enlightening features of San Bartolo.

Happily surprised to see the architecture of Plan de Ayulta covered as well as San Bartolo
Excellently written and beautifully illustrated and edited. San Bartolo gets thorough attention here. I was especially pleased to see the coverage of Plan de Ayutla, a lesser known site near Bonampak. I had the pleasure of traveling on David Stuart's Maya Field Workshop last December. In addition to Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak, we were able to visit to Plan de Ayutla which has some unique architecture and happily is covered in Maya Archaeology 1. On a side note, I just received my Maya Archeology 2 book which is equally awesome.

both for the coverage of the topics observed and for the beautiful photos and line drawing in each edition
This series is exceptional, both for the coverage of the topics observed and for the beautiful photos and line drawing in each edition. Though technical in approach, it is easy to read and will certainly provide insight into the Maya culture for anyone who is interested.

Beautiful Images!
Images are 5 star! Sadly I was confused and thought this would have some copy on San Bartolo, it does not. This is a book of only images of San Bartolo. [ and other sites]

Disappointing
This item isn't worth the price. It comes with nonetheless high quality images , but only of the North Wall murals of San Bartolo. The information it provides is scarce. This is a picture book for the ordinary reader.
