Art of Practising the Violin: With Useful Hints for All String Players

Could be helpful if it spent more time just giving good instructions for exercises ranging from basic to more advanced. Instead it is excessively technical and the exercises are really only useful for fairly advanced players. The book is like learning to play the violin by reading stereo instructions. I am pretty much an intermediate player. None of this was terribly helpful. It was just boring and protracted.

I bought this on recommendation of a friend and wish I'd had it much sooner. It is good for adults or advanced students who need something to refer to during the week while practicing. It is not really a book for beginners or for people who aren't already motivated to practice. But it can definitely help make practicing more efficient and productive.

Very informative, not really written for a novice but, has some easy to understand suggestions for those who aren't planning on being professionals.

Excellent book. This is a must read for every violinist. However, as much as I admire his discussion of finger patterns I think that his nomenclature for the patterns is problematic and there are many very useful patterns that he does not describe.

This book was recommended to me by my violin teacher. It was written by a very famous violist who was also a first-class teacher.These two things are not necessarily the same. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious enough about playing to understand that regular practice is essential. You can have all the talent in the world, but you are only as good as your practice. This book starts from the assumption than none of us has unlimited time and energy. So , how to make the best use of the time and energy that we have? Provided you take this book at walking speed, not at a gallop, it will offer you solid help and advice.

A very, very good guide that tells you exactly what you need to do to play the violin with success. What's even better is that the book is very short and concise! Buy it immediately if you're are a reasonably advanced violinist with any desire to improve your playing!
