I think it makes a difference
I bought this item in October 2005, somewhere around when Amazon introduced it, I think. In February 2005 my cat had gotten into the living room during a week while we were on vacation, and he trashed the carpet. I had carpet cleaners out three times, applied various pet odor products several times (cannot recommend anything there), tore up parts of the padding and floor molding, and still believed I was smelling something. So, I was in despair and bought this product. Back then it sold for $18.99; I'm not sure I would spend the current amount of almost $50 for this (because I'm cheap plus I don't believe this is a permanent solution), but as long as I remember to keep water in this, I now rarely smell anything in the living room. It is imperative to keep it filled with water. The minute the water has evaporated, I notice the smell again. Also, I think it's doing something because there is such a scummy residue in the container once the water is gone. A nice feature is that all parts of this can go in the dishwasher for cleaning. Maybe this is all in my mind, but the bottom line is when I have this full of water, I don't smell anything in there, but once it's dry, back comes the smell. April 25, 2008 update: As an experiment, I have not filled up the cleanser for the past two months, and I don't notice any difference from when I was using it with water. At the current price of $69.95, I feel compelled to say this item isn't worth trying.

They were kidding, right?
Let me get right to the point... it doesn't work. For those that claimed it did... maybe they just WANTED it to work so badly that they convinced themselves there was a difference? It didn't work in our smelly diaper room or in our kitchen, not even in the tiny cupboard where we keep the trash pail. We followed the directions precisely, even rereading the little booklet incase we missed something. The only reason we gave it one star is that we didn't have the option of giving it none.

works great!
this thing seems to work great for me. i put it in an area where my dog has her training pads and the area remains odor free. it worked so well, i put it in the refridgerator to remove an odor there. after a day or two, i had to bring it back out because the smell of the training pad area started smell really badly again, reminding me how effective the smellkiller was.also, after a few days, i can see a disgusting layer form on the top of the water, which i'm sure is the organic molecules collecting on the surface. even more grossly reassuring is that there is a slimy feel to the inside of the bowl when i clean it.

Dont buy this
Get a goldfish it will work better. Even if you don't feed the goldfish. Only thing this does is evaporate water and leave a white ring around the cheap plastic dish. You can fool yourself only for so long ..

if you are having probelms with it...
After reading all of the reviews for this product, it seems like it either works great or not at all. Perhaps there is some factor that influences how well it functions. Perhaps it has to do with the different mineral content in different tap waters? If it doesn't work for you, perhaps your water is too pure. Maybe add a teeny tiny touch of salt? Don't know if this could work, just a thought.

Didn't work for me either
I bought the Smellkiller for a very small area containing a litter box. I have had it for several weeks and have kept water in it, but there has been no difference at all in the odor.

Actually works
My wife & I were very skeptical of this but since it was recommended by a professional we trust, we figured we'd give it a shot.We are quite happy (& surprised) to report that it actually works. We use it primarily in the kitchen and are impressed. It is not a magic solution--it is not going to eliminate all odors in 30 seconds--but it was a noticeable difference in "lingering" kitchen smells the next morning that aren't so pleasant. The Smellkiller does not absolve you of having to clean your kitchen after cooking but it sure helps in getting rid of the after odors without having to use scented sprays. Well done!

It failed to work for me
A collegue of mine raved about it--she has several of the smaller model in her home and brought one in the office. I tried it for a day, but was not convinced either way. Then, I bought the largest model, and tried it at home. I used it exactly as written in the instructions and put it to the "acid test". I used it in the toilet room, closed the door, and let it sit there for 8 hours. When I inspected the room, I could still smell what I smelled 8 hours earlier. And I so wanted it to work! The other thing that bothers me is that it is supposed to make the odors undectable to the human nose, but even the manufacturer does not claim that it actually removes the source of the odor (as does a HEPA air filter).
