Review: Dragonfly by Julia Golding
3.5 Stars. While reading this book all I could think of was my childhood memories, how my mother use to tell me Indian children stories when I use to be sick in bed. Just like this, stories of distant prince's and princesses who had to leave their homeland and marry some else who they have never met just so that they can save their land from war through an alliance. And then they meet and hate each other at first sight. Then something happens, chaos ensues, they go on a adventure. Their faith begins to waver, they grow as a character, love happens. They experience new culture, new places. Save their country and also defeat the villain. All in all, an end to happy day. The plot is something I have read thousand of times but the only distinction I could find was the different culture created. That being said, sometimes the old cliches sticks out to us, because inwardly we love them.

Classic and fresh, a winning combination
I really enjoyed this book. It is a classic fantasy story which none the less feels fresh and new. Also a totally predictable romance (in that you know from the beginning they're going to end up together) that managed to surprise me with each twist. Maybe it's because I found the characters so totally engaging, and the writing so clear and direct, that I was completely engrossed in the story. Altogether it gave me the same 'feel' as The Blue Sword, by Robin McKinley, and there's not much higher praise than that.

I got rhis book out the library when I was tiny and read it twice before returning it. I got it out a few years later and did the same. I remembered it a few months ago and I had to read it! It was everything I remembered and more. It's got adventure and romance and is really just perfect. There's a princesses who can rescue herself and a prince who understands this. Just amazing really. 10/10 will probs read again.

view all 4 status updatesreview I really really enjoyed Dragonfly. A great book to start off the New Year. The development of the story and the character was really well written. It was well paced. The story was original and Golding's world was full of culture and tradition.I loved the characters especially Ramil and Gordoc.Even the antagonist was hard to hate because he was so well written.

Lively characters and great worldbuilding
This was recommended by a friend who’s enjoyed several of Golding’s books. In some ways, it’s a classic fantasy novel: the Crown Princess of one country and the Prince of another are shoved into an arranged marriage that neither wants. Their cultures differ sharply, leaving them constantly misreading one another’s actions and emotions. The marriage alliance is deemed necessary because an empire is getting ready to attack them both. Separately, they won’t survive. What distinguishes the book is the liveliness with which major and minor characters are drawn and the girl’s unique culture. It was a lot of fun to read.
