what is the difference between the large and the small?

The size of large is 13.5x7x6 in(122.7 fl oz), the small is 12x6x4.5 in(66.9 fl oz). If you need to store lots of items, we recommend the large, otherwise the small one is better.

Can you wash this or soak it in the washing machine on gentle cycle to clean it or remove the new smell? Does it bleed the dye?

I've never washed it, but I am sure if you just rinse it in the sink with cold water and a little laundry soap it would probably be just fine. Or just set it out in the garage or another open air place for a few days.
