It is every thing the comments say it is and a great insulator. I put it on the top of the ceiling in my steel hull boat. Works great stopping the radiant heat from penitrating into the living space. I just left it in the plastic bag it was packed in so no mess.

CR-10 3d Printer bed now heats to 100ºC with this mat
I taped this pad to the underside of the bed on my CR-10 3d printer. Previously it took a long time to reach and stay at 90ºC in about 30 min. Now it goes to 100ºC with a smooth ramp up in temperature and stays there consistently in approx 15 min. I cut the mat about 3/4" smaller than the bed all the way around and used aluminum foil tape to attach. I covered the entire exposed surface of the aerogel with foil. BE AWARE: cutting this stuff produces a LOT of dust which may be hazardous to inhale or get in your eyes.

Degrades into dust quickly
Great temperature insulation properties for stationary applications but not so good for dynamic uses; if handled to much it starts to dust off. You can only handle it so much before it turns into dust.

Not sure what this is supposed to be, but warning.
Don't handle this with bare hands. The mechanical properties are poor.It might be a very good insulator, but:a) It's not that light.b) Emits dust of unknown risk.

Useful product but also dangerous.
This product is essentially aerogel dust incorporated into an fiberglass lattice that also appears to have been coated with a hydrophobic layer. Be careful when you open it, you are likely to be exposed to highly fine particulates which constitute a health hazard and risk for mesothelioma. So wear a high quality mask, especially when cutting it. It works as an insulator, it is hydrophobic and it floats well enough that the rated density is probably not too far off. This is fine for lining a dewer.

Impressive
I bought several of these. I re-manufactured a soft-cooler from Amazon selected to accommodate these particular sample sheets. The cooler was conventionally insulated with generic foam from the factory. By slitting the cooler's exterior just under the zipper -- I trimmed and inserted these into the four sides and used the trimmings to fill out the bottom. I hand stitched the 'cut' and sealed with a PU adhesive.Camping; I pre-cooled to mod'ed cooler with ice in a bag. Placed 2 lbs of frozen ground beef, 2 lbs of frozen butter, 9 lbs of cold beef cuts, 5 lbs of prepared pork-belly, & 2 packages of bacon with a few odds and ends and closed the cooler. The cooler went into a re-use single layer of bubble plastic with Mylar on one side which was folded down as with a Christmas package. This went into a convenient sized Amazon box and off I went for 7 nights and 8 days, car-camping.I was impressively happy that it was cold enough until the morning of the 7th day whereupon I consolidated my few items into the coldest of the conventional plastic bodied -- filled with foam, full sized coolers with everyone else's stuff in it that was 're-charged' with bought ice. This turned the bargain soft-cooler into a stellar performer that weighs next to nothing, empty. It works great for 4-half gallon-ish packages of ice cream -- which I used for the 2023 July 4th party ( ~ 90ºF ).Of conventional insulators -- there is no "tremendous" difference in the insulating R-factors. The greatest advantage in the myriad of choices is in *how* the insulation is installed and unit price per square foot."Ball-parking"; Aerogels are *roughly* 10X more effective as insulators than foams, natural, or stone/ceramic fibers, spun glass, various cellulosic options or repurposed garment fibers. A closed-wall vacuum insulator ( Dewers Flask/Thermos ) is *roughly* 10X more effective than Aerogels.

Be Careful
I’m sure I missed it but be aware that you will need gloves and or a mask to use this. It’s a lot like fiberglass insulation. You don’t want to breath it or get it in your eyes or get it on your skin. It’s a great product. Just wanted to make everyone aware of safety precautions since I must’ve missed them.

OPEN OUTSIDE!!
I literally just opened this package and it would appear that fiberglass dust went everywhere. I wouldn't recommend opening inside like I just did. White powder residue on my hands as well. Can't speak to the quality of the product just yet but figured I'd give a fair warning to future consumers.
