Gritty real history
I second everything said in the previous review. This is gritty history told as it happened from a first-person point of view. It is an amazing TRUE saga of tremendous human trial, suffering and loss, but also of triumph over unimaginable ordeals. As you read you will feel your mouth go bone dry and sweat trickle down your face as you follow them trudging through days of no water in the 100o+ Mojave Desert heat in July, and upon finding a small seep spring bring the water out in teaspoonfuls for themselves and the horses. You will feel the fear as murderous army doctors consciously administer poison to the people as "medicine" at the point of a gun when they refused. You will feel the blisters tearing open on your palms and the stabbing pain in your muscles as you follow them while hand digging out the road blazed up a steep rocky cliff near Anza Borrego and hauling the wagons up in pieces by ropes to the top. You will weep as they die so young and far away from beloved families. Remember, it was not just the men, but wives and children that went along to assist the troops and endured this triumphant slog through hell as well. And you will marvel at the tenacity, strength and resilience of the human spirit of faith on the longest forced infantry march in history. Every student of California history should know these stories. It should be required reading at every university. As a direct descendent of Mormon Battalion Capt. Jefferson Hunt and wife Celia Mounts Hunt through their two-year-daughter twin Mary Hunt who lost twin Parley to death on the trek, I can't recommend it enough. Read it, weep, and marvel.
