The Ugly Five

Embracing Uniqueness
In "The Ugly Five" by Julia Donaldson, readers are introduced to a delightful cast of characters who are not part of Africa's revered Big Five, but instead, they are the lesser-known Ugly Five. Among them is the wildebeest, who enters the story feeling somewhat sorry for herself, singing a song about being the "ugly one" with whiskers and a beard. As the wildebeest meets other members of the Ugly Five, such as the hyena with his ugly laugh and spotty fur, they realize they are not alone in feeling grim about their appearances. Together, they form a camaraderie and sing a song about being the "ugly two," then continue their journey to meet more members of their group. But amidst their self-doubt, the Ugly Five stumble upon a heartwarming realization. In a clearing, they encounter a group of babies, their babies, who see them as beautiful and lovely, demonstrating true unconditional love. The book is not just a tale about animals; it's about self-acceptance, finding where you belong, and the power of unconditional love. The story ends with a question: Who would you want to see on safari?

Great story for kids and love.
I saw this book in a shop in Wales in 2018 and it intrigued by it, so I took a picture to remember it. I ordered it for my granddaughter in 2021. I was utterly delighted and I gave her the book and I bought the audio book narrated by Imelda Staunton. It is delightful

All you need is love — and these books.
I love Julia Donaldson’s whimsical tales for my toddlers. And for myself. They’re fun and I LOVE Axel Scheffler‘s illustrations. I want the collections for my kids — but really myself.

Our current favorite
We have nearly 25 of Julia Donaldson’s books and they’ve all taken turns as my sons favorite. The Ugly Five, however, has got to be his absolute favorite of all. We read it multiple times a day and he plays it on his Yoto player on repeat. He recites words (and songs) from the book and he’s not yet 2 years old. If you struggle with how to read the rhymes or songs in Donaldson books, I suggest looking up the audiobooks read by Imelda Staunton. The illustrations by Scheffler are, as always, so pleasant to look at. There is even an index of animals at the back of the book which is a nice bonus.

No! I don't like a child to learn calling things ugly :|
Well, if your child doesn't categorize things as ugly yet, they'll learn to do it through this book.I understand the idea behind the book but it could be better. Text is fine, not liking the way the idea is conveyed!
