Give That Enterprise Drive a New Lease on Life
So here’s the deal: SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drives are workhorses. They’re built like tanks, have insane endurance ratings, and often hit the used market for dirt cheap after being pulled from data centers. But they won’t natively plug into standard SATA ports… unless you have this little adapter. The Chenyang SFF-8482 to SATA 22-pin adapter is a simple, elegant solution. You plug the SAS drive into the adapter, then plug the whole thing into a standard SATA data/power cable, and boom—you’ve got a SAS drive running in a consumer machine. Kinda feels like cheating... but in a good way.

Bunk product because....
"The use of SATA hard drives on SAS controllers is made possible by the fact that both share the same infrastructure and have similar features.SATA drives may be plugged into SAS controllers.SAS drives cannot be plugged into SATA controllers."This is straight from the Seagate website. I have a Seagate SAS drive I was trying to access with this adapter and it was not recognized by the computer. The last sentence there explains why. It's almost as if this product was created under false pretense...

Works Perfectly for it's INTENDED PURPOSE
IMPORTANT: If you don't understand how SAS and SATA drives differ and what you need to use SAS drives in your system then don't even think about buying this. It will NOT make SAS drives work with the SATA controllers found in consumer PCs and NAS devices. That's not what this adapter is for. If you don't understand why that's the case then do yourself a favor and don't buy this thing. Spend your money on a good book about computer architecture instead. That said, these are decent little adapters at a good price. I'm using them with an SFF-8087 breakout cable on an LSI 9212-4i4e to connect bare SAS drives on the benchtop for testing and other odd jobs. They're nothing special, but they work fine and this setup saves me from having to pull drives in and out of the SAN just to run a few tests or scrub them for decommission. Very useful for what they're intended for.Note for Pros: One downside to these adapters is that they partially block the serial diagnostics port on some drive models - most notably Seagates. You can just barely get to the pins on most Seagate drives using a ribbon cable with individual leads but a standard multi-pin connector isn't going to work. It's not a deal killer but it makes diagnostics and data recovery a little more of hassle. I knocked off one star because of that issue. Otherwise all good.

Works
It’s been in constant use for several months, and so far hasn’t melted or anything. It’s a simple passthrough device, so no compatibility issues to worry about—as long as your controller supports SAS, you’re fine.
