Interesting.
My Dad already has a copy of this book and lent it to my nephew who really liked it, so I got another so both can browse it when they like.

Well written, well illustrated
When I first saw this book, with its colourful front cover and subtitle of `The Ultimate Guide to Choosing and Using Electronic, Acoustic and Digital Instruments' I expected to find a guide aimed at youngsters and their parents to decide which musical instrument they are best suited to learn. What I found though was an extremely detailed encyclopaedia style book well arranged into chapters covering each type of instrument (from all regions of the world), such as percussion, brass, woodwind, stringed instruments, keyboards and electronic. There are plenty of illustrations and photos (all colour) with just the right amount of history and technical explanation on how each instrument is played, tuned and used to make the learning an interesting experience. The latter section, more specific to European music, is a chronological overview of how western instruments developed from the 1600's to the present day.Useful sections also include a decibel rating for each instrument (even including an iPod!), pitch ranges of the instrument, and a nice glossary of common music terms to help explain the text. For an informative book on instruments of the world, rather than composers and artists, this is a very enjoyable read.
