Making Out in Indonesian: Revised Edition (Indonesian Phrasebook) (Making Out Books)

I've been studying Indonesian seriously for about a year and a half now and have been studying casually since I married my Indonesian wife 10 years ago. I thought it would be interesting to learn some of the slang better since many books only very briefly cover this.Some of these translations my wife felt were a bit old fashioned. Like the use of "pegi" instead of "pergi".Then I came across sialan which was translated as "Too Bad!" I recognize this phrase because it was taught to me as part of another phrase "Sialan lu!" Which essentially translates to "FU!" so I ask my wife if the literal translation is actually "Too Bad! You". She says it's interesting they translate it this way because "Sial" by itself means "Bad luck". So this translation isn't quite accurate either. Also I didn't see any pronunciation guides along with any of the words. However, what I do like about this book is that it will help me get used to some of the slang which is used. Too often I hear phrases like "lu" or "gua" used and it throws me off since I learned "aku", "saya", "kamu" and "anda". Still for 5 bucks it's worth a read if you are really serious about learning to understand spoken Indonesian.

I'm indonesian, I bought this as a gift for my colleague because he likes to learn indonesian slang. Before I gave it to him I read some of the chapter. It's great for those who want to learn colloquial indonesian.I only give 4 stars because I found a few sentences that sounds kind of weird for me because it's mixing colloquial and a bit formal word.But overall it's a great book.

I've bought several books from the Making Out series and they have always delivered. If you're looking to impress or surprise your new Indonesian friend, this book is it. I've studied a lot of languages but few books get as deep and address the slang and colorful phrases of the culture as does this one. If you're looking for a more formal introduction to the Indonesian language this book may not be for you. But if you enjoy a little spice to life, you won't be disappointed.MoPop

This is more useful as a comedic gag gift than an actual guide "Hidungmu Bagus" translates into "You have a beautiful nose". Overall if you use it you will sound like a sleeze, but the purchase was worth it for the laughs I got from Indonesian friends and colleagues.

This book is standard publishing company fluff with a catchy title. It's a few words copied out of a dictionary. The same words are repeated several times per page (i.e. if they show the word used with 'I', then they also show it used with 'you', 'he', &c. even though the verb doesn't change in Indonesian). The text is spaced in such a way as to make the book appear bigger than it actually is. In essence the information contained in this book would fit on one page.

I guess, if a person just wants to know how to be vulgar in Indonesian, this may prove helpful. Many of the uses (gua in place of saya, for example) are not as commonly used as this pamphlet (can't call it a book, really) would suggest. My suggesion is, save your money for something more constructive.
