Great for preschool reading
Simple, repetitive and easy for beginning readers. Some kids will be extremely happy to read over and over with confidence. (three yr. old) Others may fine them boring and read them only once and need to go up a level or two (the five yr.old).Your five year old may be what is needed to get started in reading. These animal and also the science readers were what excited my boys to read. I'm a retired primary reading teacher.

I'm keeping them as I see a good use, but not as planned
I was expecting the stories to be more focused on 3 letter blends. What I learned is that they focus on a sound and highlight in bold the words in the sentence with that sound. I'm keeping them as I see a good use, but not as planned.

Not that great
Yes the books a phonics books, but the rest of the text is too hard for a child learning phonics at this level. If a child needs to be working on cvc words, learning short vowel words, these are too hard.

Bad Grammar
We have Animal Phonics Readers by Liza Charlesworth. One of the books in the series is "Lots of Frogs". The back of the book reads, "This book has got lots of frogs." The first page reads, "This frog has got lots of spots." The second page reads, "This frog has got big red eyes." I find with most books any more some bad grammar has to be ignored, but I draw the line at "has got" in a book that is supposed to be helping my children learn to read.
