Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and Other Puritan Sermons (Dover Thrift Editions: Religion)

American Puritan Sermons
First I would like to say how appreciative I am to be able to access these sermons for such a low cost. I’ve read a few of these sermons and they are very inspiring. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” should be required reading for all the “lukewarm” Christian’s which populate our country.I cannot give this edition 5 stars since it includes, in the very back, not one- but two- Unitarian sermons, which is contrary to the Christian and also the Puritan faith. Bear that in mind as you purchase this, that it might be a good idea to blot out the Unitarian sermons with a marker or to simply rip them out if it can be done without harm to the book and binding itself.

Puritan Preaching...Convicting Power for today
This book is just as appropriate for today as it was back in the late 1500's. It has multiple sermons written by various preachers, but the main thrust is a sermon by Johnathan Edwards, which topic is about Hell...in vivid detail, as though he himself had actually gone there and came back again to authorize its description. He contrasts Hell with the absolute need for salvation, for it alone is the ONLY way to escape its clutches, because if you "neglect so great a salvation," you WILL suffer for all eternity Hell's torment, outer darkness, flames which cannot--nor ever will be--quenched, and will be lost due to your choice of ignoring the Atonement that Christ provided on the Cross of Calvary. It was said that this sermon was so frightening that it brought the congregation who heard it "to tears and convulsions." Rev. Edwards takes his sermon from Amos 9:2,3 and Deut. 32:35.A great read, a literal masterpiece!

Excellent collection!
The only other thing I would add to the glowing reviews - read up on the history of the times. There are short bios of all the preachers, including the the "lesser known", but a good historical background will make the selections even more interesting. These men were the pillars of New England Puritanism & it's good to place them in context. The first time I read this, I had no background. For this reading I do & the collection is much more illuminating.

Rich Sermons
The classic Edwards sermon plus other less reknown Puritan preachers. Note: print is rather small and was a challenge for my eyes

Package arrived as promised and well packaged for safe delivery. This was ordered for someone else. They stated, "I found it hard to listen to due to speaker's subject matter. Haven't been able to listen to all of it."

Each and every person who calls them self a follower ...
Each and every person who calls them self a follower of Christ needs to read this book. I bought 2, one to underline and keep for myself, one to give away.

Hold out the light of the world and lift the veil of God
This is the first set of Puritan sermons that I have ever read and the second book I read by the Puritans. These are the voices that we so need to hear today. They might be from the past eras but the truth they are passionately conveying is timeless. It is difficult to describe the experience of reading through the sermons. the best I can do is to say that the Puritans possessed the power to speak directly to your soul, subject you to the most intimate and intense scrutiny from which you cannot hide. It was as if our innermost has come into the searching spotlight of God's Word that scans through us. They speak very directly from the truth and of the truth. There is no concern to soften the impact of God's Word on our ears - they are only interested in delivering God's Word in the most authentic and pure form without any packaging or wrappings to appease to us. Their hearts were fired up by their passion for the gospel; their concern was to bring the biblical reality to us as our reality to counter Satan's lies and deception that plague our life; their focus was sharp and narrow on Christ; their logic was on fire too that brings conviction; the vigour in their reasoning penetrates deep into God's truth.Their style may read blunt by today's standard. But don't we wish to hear God's Word clearly? God is veiled from our human nature. These saints had a close communion with God which is reflected in their understanding and writings - which I am sure God uses even today to bring us closer to Him. Their writings help tear down that veil and help us hear God's word and see Him. Their words are like a mirror that reflects brilliantly of God's glory and brightness! Finally to me, it is impossible to read this book with the mind only; the heart is actively engaged and absorbing all the impact, whether it is comforting or convicting.Malachi 2:7 speaks of the true priest: "For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts." I believe these puritans have held true to this role. The lofty things of God and heaven are veiled from our naked eyes corrupted by our sinful nature. The puritans are making a conscientious effort to write down the lofty things that they have seen for people who cannot yet see.The book prints the sermons as they were, so their spellings are different from today. As the authors spanned a vast period, how the spelling deviates from today's varies from one author to another, reflecting, I suppose, their different periods. If you can put up with that, this is a gem that your soul would really cherish and appreciate.
