The Dragons of Blueland (My Father's Dragon)

Overall nice story, a few complaints
We loved this little series overall and it was a super fun read aloud for my 5 and 2 yos. The literary and imaginative nature of these books is overall excellent. This last book in the series I had a couple complaints about. In the book the farmer uses the description of the dragon as a “Blue Demon” which I think could be better described as a monster instead so I just edited it as I read aloud to that term. I don’t like using the term demon in a child’s story. Also a few uses of the word “gosh” which we don’t use in our home as it is slang for God’s name. I edited it out in the read aloud as well. And finally, the binding on this particular book was awful. I know it wasn’t supposed to be a high quality binding but the above picture was after being opened a few times and happened within days of just average use. These things aside, we enjoyed the final chapter of the adventures with the dragon and Elmer.

A must for every child
This chapter book is part of a trilogy. A story about a boy who sets out to free a dragon using courage, surprising ingenuity with common house hold objects, tolerance, agility in dealing with creatures and situations, and doing the right thing. Beautiful black and white illustrations (as unique and memorable as the story). Depending on the child- good for 4 YO to 8 YO. My kids loved it 30 years ago, my grandchildren love it now.

Great introduction to chapter books
We bought the whole series (My Father's Dragon, Elmer and the Dragon, The Dragons of Blueland) for our 3 year old son. He LOVES these books. We have read them at least five times each since buying them a couple weeks ago. A chapter is a great length for a quick bedtime story, although we usually end up reading two or three chapters. There are some pages without any pictures, but no more than one spread in a row is without a picture, which helps keep his interest. Additionally, the pictures are well-placed so that if anything happens that kids might find scary (like Elmer meeting hungry tigers in My Father's Dragon) there is a picture that shows that everything is okay on that same page. My son hates conflict in books, or for things to be too scary, so I feel like these books strike a great balance. Nobody (Elmer, the Dragon, any animals they meet) gets injured or eaten, they just get bested with clever solutions. In these books, Elmer is kind, helpful, and resourceful. I am happy to read these books over and over to my son because the story is good and Elmer is a good role model. I would recommend this series highly as a first chapter book series to read aloud to any child.

True entertainment!
I was browsing at a bookstore and was randomly drawn by the artwork on the cover of the first book in this series "My Fathers Dragon". I know, the old saying "never judge a book by it's cover" is a good edict to hold to, so I read both the back and inside cover to find that it was first published the late 1940's. On a whim I decided to buy it for my daughter who in turn loved it so much that she woke up early the next morning to read before school, which was rare and exciting all at once. Even for an adult, it seems like such a great idea to imagine packing a backpack with traveling "essentials" such as pink bubble gum and rubber bands. The main character Elmer falls into many traps that he creatively works through including tricking a lion by brushing his hair, befriending a dragon, and so on. As a parent what I love best is that all of these books evolve around mishaps that end with good clean humor not unecessary modern-day-drama or blood-guts-and-gore! The next obvious step was to purchase the remaining two books (this being the last in the series)and my daughter has loved them so much that she took them all to school to share in class and they still haven't come back. Unlike most series books that seem to get boring as they go along, this trio has held our attention all the way through! A 'must have' for any 7 or 8 (or 32+) year old readers out there.

A must read!
A must read! It’s enjoyable for kids and adults. I was a preschool teacher and this was one of the books we read to the four year olds turning five. Now my daughter has really enjoyed it as her first chapter book. Also we made our own map and followed Elmer on his adventure and she got a pink lollipop just like the crocodiles at the end of the book. Absolutely love this book and highly recommend for beginners!

Great Lit
This is the third of the My Father’s Dragon trilogy. The set is a great first adventure story for children. I love to read it to my kindergarten class so they learn how fun reading can be!

I've been looking everywhere for this series~!
I read these as a child and loved all of the books. Years later, I could not recall the name of the series and couldn't find anyone who had heard of them. Finally, Google led me to the title and of course I found it on Amazon. These books are filled with wonder and creativity. They inspired a sort of "McGyver" quality in me that continues to grow. While the economy was crashing, I was building a successful business out of virtually nothing. I would credit part of this spirit of my development to this book series. If you would like to teach a child to think practically and in a pinch, these books are perfect.Cucumber sandwiches =)I would love to give Ruth Stiles Gannett a big hug for writing them.

Elmer trilogy
We really loved reading these three books, they took us all to far away lands and imaginations grew. We have re-read several times and still loving them. Would highly recommend to anyone with young children.

Excellent read!
I purchased this book for my 5 year old son. It is an excellent way to introduce story books, without pictures (there is a black and white illustration on about every third page). The story grabbed his attention right away, he couldn't get enough!I would recommend this book ( and the others in the series) to anyone wanting to get their child excited about reading!

Adventurous tales suitable for younger kids
The Elmer books are a great introduction into chapter books... There's real adventure that doesn't get too scary, pictures on most pages and great to read with younger kids (my five year old daughter loved all three).
