Match leaves are unique in that they are grown in the shade for the final three weeks before they are picked. After picking, the leaves are then steamed, dried, and ground into a fine powder. During the final three weeks in the shade, the plants produce more thiamine and caffeine, which in combination are said to produce a soothing yet invigorating effect when consumed. Match tea is consumed by mixing and whisking the powder with hot water in a match chawing (match tea bowl). Typically, match bowls are 4-1/2 to 5 inches in diameter measured at the rim. The sides of the bowl are usually formed slightly inward from a right angle, and are about 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches in height. These dimensions are ideal for vigorously whisking the powder with the hot water into a froth. The ample diameter of the inner bowl allows for enough surface area to energetically whisk and aerate the concoction, while the relatively tall and angled sides ensure against spills. Choosing an authentic, high-quality match bowl is not only essential for proper whisking, but should also be pleasurable to look at and hold. This match bowl has an attractive milky white finish with winter plum blossom design. Made in Japan.
