This Worked Great for Gold Finches!
In early summer, I noticed that a pair of Gold Finches (1 male, 1 female) had showed up in our back yard. Eager to keep them around, I ordered the cheap "Audubon" Thistle Seed (Nyjer Seed) feeder from Amazon. The birds would NOT feed from it no matter what. They clearly saw it, but would not land on it, much less feed from it. Amazon graciously allowed me to replace the cheap feeder with this model. Further research had led me to this feeder. Voilá! The Gold Finches went right to it within a matter of a few hours after I hung it up! I filled it with the same Nijer seed I had used in cheap feeder. They now feed from it daily. I am hopeful that they are a mating pair, and that we will have little finches at this feeder soon. Bottom line, this feeder worked, when the cheaper feeder didn't. It is sturdy and well built, and worth the money if you want to attract and keep those beautiful Gold Finches! 5 Stars across the board in my book.

well-made, well-designed feeder
Nice, solid feeder, and the finches seem to like it...and, maybe more importantly, the other birds and squirrels seem to really dislike it. I don't know why most bird feeders are so cheaply constructed and poorly designed; this one has neither of those issues. The metal bits are very solid, and the ability to fill it from the bottom is nice. (1: The older seed winds up on top when you add fresh seed from the bottom, so it gets eaten. 2: It lets you add a bit of silicone caulk where the hanging wire enters to make the rubber grommet at the top completely watertight. One other reviewer mentioned that a bit of water might've been leaking in along the wire, which is pretty much inevitable with any sort of penetration in the lid. Since you can open the bottom, the top never really needs to come off.)There's a threaded hole in the bottom, too, so you could theoretically mount it on a pole or attach a hook to hang a second feeder from the bottom of this one.

Finches love it!
This is a very nice bird feeder, however...its not very easy to fill it as it does not have a flat bottom to sit it down.

Best finch feeder I have found so far.
I've tried many finch feeders, trying to attract goldfinch, and yet not be an easy target for squirrels.I like the simplicity of this design, they overall look and the fact that there is really nothing a squirrel can easily get hold of to make it worth while.I filled mine with sunflower seed chips, and I am seeing male and female goldfinch eating for the first time within the past year. And they stay and eat for some time! One thing I have discovered, as with all feeders, if it gets wet, the seed inside will sprout and get mucky. I am looking for some type of hood to try, or I will move to a covered location when raining.Check feeder weekly, empty, clean and refill for best results. This feeder is easy to disassemble, clean and dry.

Goldfinches love this feeder.
Within a day the local goldfinches found the feeder. They use it daily now. It's a unique design that actually works. As described by the maker the goldfinches slide up and down the spiral perch. Matched with another goldfinch feeder I can now have as many as 4 to 6 goldfinches hanging out at once. That's what's called a "charm" of goldfinches.

Do not buy
I really wanted to like this item as it is visually attractive, and I liked that it didn't have wire mesh that birds could get their feet caught in. I gave it every chance, but it's just not worth the money. Honestly, if it were free it would still be pretty useless. Summary of issues: seeds inevitably get moldy, caked, and very difficult to remove. The way the feeder is designed, the metal spiral obstructs the bottom and top of the feeder making it very difficult to get a towel, brush, or anything into the tube to clean it. Despite the pics other reviewers have of finches using this feeder, I found that they would land then take off, unable to find the seed holes. Also, the yellow paint has been flaking off the metal caps on both ends, exposing rust.

Allows rain to get inside and mold seed
This is a cool feeder but it consistently allows rain to get inside the cylinder, causing the seed at the bottom to get soaked and mold. Finches love this feeder until the seed starts to mold in a week and they wont touch it. If it doesn't rain where you are, its a great feeder It needs a rain top of some sort.
