David Prescott Barrows' History of the Philippines was published in 1904 as the first comprehensive account of the history of the islands, as presented right after the war between the Philippines and the United States. Outlining a colorful and interesting, as well as significantly objective interpretation of the history of the country, Barrows manages to place many of the most important historical events into perspective, while presenting a clear picture of the islands, as they were viewed during the turn of the 20th century. Barrows' presentation of the Philippines is not only a detailed account of the history of the various occupations of the islands, but the conflicts between the natives and nations such as Spain and America that they were mainly involved with. Also, one of the most important considerations of this book is that it portrays quite a comprehensive image of the world's history in reference to events happening in the Philippines at the same time. Examples include the complex issue of trade routes opened by the islands around the 1400s, when Christian nations were in search of routes that would not intrude on Muslim territories, or the state of the Filipino natives before the arrival of the Spanish, including details on their culture, language and traditions, and how they have altered under Spanish occupation. The History of the Philippines is presented in a lightweight fashion, without too much emphasis on dates and numbers, Barrows placing far more importance on the precise links and causes behind the events and influences that have led to the country's development in the precise state it was at the beginning of the1900s. Free but,,,
The book has little value for understanding the modern history of the Philippines. It is a reprint of an old textbook employed by the Americans in the Philippines soon after the American occupation. However, it may be of interest as an example of how the American's presented the history of the islands.

I found this book to be very enlightening. I had started reading Noli me Tangere, by Jose Rizal, and found myself asking what happened in Philippines before this, to cause the circumstances described by Jose Rizal. The book filled in all the blanks of nearly 400 years of occupation and the attempted conquests of the Philippine people by various European countries, and finally of the United States. Because this book was first published in 1905, it left out most modern history from the 20th century to today, but did a fine job of covering the early explorers that created the atmosphere that existed in the Philippines and the world at the time of Jose Rizal's Noli me Tangere.

More like a manifestation of the white man's burden
Barrows fails to recognize his US-centric bias in this "historical" account of the Philippines, and instead casts the Filipino people as uncivilized, childish, and...
