God on Your Own : Finding A Spiritual Path Outside Religion

Very little substance...
There was little substance in the book. The author did a good job describing why organized religion is hemorrhaging adherents, but his new path appeared to be comprised of little more than adopting a few fundamental Buddhist practices and espousing a belief in the importance of service to others. Coverage was very superficial and not particularly instructive.

Turned off by religion?
This book really put into words, the trials and joys ofleaving the mental traps of organized religion , and finding a connectionwith our source. I've read that "religion is for people afraid ofgoing to hell, and spirituality is for people who have already been there".I was so afriad to question the religion of of my childhood. When I was finally able to do that, I felt lost and wanted tobelieve the old religion again. I couldn't go back. How would I pray? What could replace the social life church had provided? What would "people" think? My out take of this book is that we are here on Earth and we are not sure why. I am comfortable with that finally.More comfortable than pretending to belive in redemption, etc. A creator that could make a universe, would not be described and confined to a few pages in a book. Religion is a huge industry/business. It is driven by fear, ignorance, and brainwashing. In fact, for me, religion had prevented me from being in touch with God. Sort of like, I couldn't see the forest for the trees. This book will help you make peace with your spititual, human journey.Hey, nothing wrong with being human! :)

A Bible for the Derailed Catholic
I first picked up God on Your Own several years ago, and since then have re-read it at least three times, choosing sections to linger over, permitting the wisdom to settle in. As what I like to call a "derailed Catholic," a lot of what Joseph writes about is incredibly close to my experiences, shunning religion, being angry and disillusioned by religion and lost spiritually. Yet, I longed for...something. I may not have found it yet, but this book has offered at the very least a wonderful road map. It is the first book on spirituality I have ever read that rings so close to what I have believed for so long, but have been unable to articulate. Although our paths are in many ways different - I have not lived in a monastery, for one - I feel as if Joseph has been where I've been spiritually. His story, his insight is honest, unflinching, and real. God On Your Own is for anyone who is "searching." And in many ways, isn't that all of us?

A Skeptic Catching Up
I left formalized religion over 40 years ago, so Joseph Dispenza's narrative doesn't catch up with me until about 1/3 of the way through ... but from then on it keeps getting better and better. In short, he has said that if you're not leading a spiritual life, the life isn't worth leading. I've found that to be very true of my own life. Dispenza's experiences clarify struggles I've been through and conditions required for passage. Had I known them earlier it would have been an easier trip. His ending is a metaphysical coda with all instruments playing, a resonant and optimistic look into the future.

Finaly, a book that understands me!
I have been on a spiritual journey for many years now, turned way off by organized religion. I knew that religion was doing more bad than good in this world and this book helped me verbalize and put into context ideas inside of me that have been clawing at me to reveal themselves. The author presents the information without overt religion bashing, but does take shots at all three "Big Religions" and their antiquated ideas and power schemes. He gives the reader a sense that it is OK to go thru life without having to succumb to ancient and flawed dogmas and rules of another time. He further leads one to start their own spiritual journey, thinking for themselves and discovering the pure love and energy that is the Source. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and promptly ordered 2 more of his books.

Helpful alternative
This book offers helpful, non-bias alternatives to those seeking a path of sprirtuality that does not necessarily include formal religion. The author does a very good job of sharing his journey in a way that most can relate to. Journeys of this sort are seldom linear nor conflict free. In fact, the road to authenticity is often paved with many more potholes than roads convered in conformity.

On the Path
In his many books Joseph Dispenza brilliantly updates the wanderer tradition in literature to lend insight and guidance to today's spiritual seekers. Whether exploring motion pictures, the groundbreaking path of healer Hazel Parcells, the way of the traveler, the place of silence or the finding of a spiritual path outside religion, Dispenza shares what he is learning himself -- that both the inner and outer journeys are sacred, that all of us are "prodigal sons," that there are many, seemingly different paths but all will carry us "home."
