Recipes looks good
I just received this book so I haven’t tried any of the recipes. This book does not have any pictures which I miss but does not distract from this 643 page book of wonderful recipes. I’ve read some of the recipes and they sound like I’ll enjoy preparing and eating the meals

Outstanding Resource of Recipes
I approached this cookbook out of an interest in finding low-fat, high-flavor recipes. In the few days I've had "1,000 Mexican Recipes," everything I've tried has been outstanding. The reader can find excellent guidance in how to prepare super-fresh dishes with a minimum amount of oil/butter by looking beyond the sections on quesadillas or tamale casseroles. I particularly like the author's approach to side vegetables in some of the recipes; they are minimally sauteed for sparkling, bright flavors. The seasoning combinations, of course, make the dish. I've prepared tuna steaks with a chili rub on a stovetop grill (as the author suggests absent an outdoor barbeque) topped with lightly sauteed strips of red peppers and jicama and Mexican oregano in just a touch of butter and olive oil; a fresh zucchini vinegar-and-olive oil salad (I didn't have some of the required spices on hand so I added fresh thyme sprigs and some low-fat feta cheese); the vegetarian pinto bean soup with added sauteed onions, garlic, tomatoes, cumin, chili powder and some salt; and as a side relish to have with all the meals, a bowl of pickled carrots and jalepenos, accented with cumin, allspice berries and cloves. All of these were very easy to prepare, and the balance of spices and instructed cooking times were right on the mark. From the dessert section, I made the baked apples and raisins, with just a half-teaspoon of brown sugar and butter per apple and then added cinnamon afterward. There's also a recipe for a rum butter sauce that I'll put together next time for the apples. I'm really looking forward to trying the Mexican coffee steeped with brown sugar, cinnamon sticks and whole cloves. The book is one of my best selections ever for healthy, filling, inexpensive, zesty and low-calorie meals!

Outstanding collection
This was my first Mexican cookbook. My husband and I love Mexican food, and I decided to see whether I could learn how to make some of the tasty dishes myself as opposed to buying pre-packaged mixes and salsas in a jar. 1000 Mexican Recipes was a fortunate choice! I learned the basics in the first chapters, and this gave me the confidence to try the main dishes. Wow! I was amazed at the difference it made to use some fresh ingredients and cook them properly for best results. The book has no pictures, so it's not a "coffee table book." Instead, it is a no nonsense guide to Mexican cooking that has very, very clear instructions and explanations. After trying some of these recipes I felt confident to add some creative touches of my own.I really recommend 1000 Mexican Recipes for the cook who wants to learn the techniques and ingredients of Mexican cuisine. It may not sit on my coffee table, but it is on a bookshelf right next to my kitchen....and it's getting dog-eared!

Best Authentic Mexican Cookbook ever!!
This book is my cooking Bible!! My husband is from central Mexico. I am from the US Midwest. I love to cook, but lifetime of different cuisine. He told me that he didn’t know some of the recipes, but they used spices he knew and loved. I love it as well. I also like the recipes are for 4 servings. You can easily double or triple. I bought this book for my young Hispanic family members and they love it. That speaks volumes!! This book has some of the exotic recipes but it also has the normal every day recipes! Easy to find ingredients in US grocery stores.

All the Méxican cookbook you will ever need. A pleasure.
I read so many reviews before I bought my copy. I think it has all been said. I just love this book, it is entertaining to read and offers detailed instructions, like "toast the chiles for 10 seconds, careful not to burn them or they will become bitter" . It really walks you through the preparation in a nice way. All the meals I have prepared from this have been fabulous. I bought a second copy to give as a gift. I live in México and these recepies are authentic and yet, somehow perfect for my not entirely native palate.

Very good resource for Mexican recipes
Very good resource for Mexican recipes, the only downside is the american publishers have been shortsighted in not including metric measurements, which can be very frustrating. Other than that I have had fun trying out some very tasty recipes!

worth it just for the coctails
Great book, not just for the food but the descriptions of Mexico as well, not as good as Tommi, but worthwhile getting. Friend of mine spent all night just reading the cocktail chapter!!!

Comprehensive but lacking in style
This is a comprehensive collection of recipes for everyday Mexican food that I turn to when I've got an ingredient that I'm not too sure what to do with for a weeknight dinner - it's all there and the recipes turn out well, although by its nature the book doesn't have the same appeal and flair as say Dianna Kennedy's tomes on classical Mexican cooking, chef's Miguel Ravago, Robert Santibanez or Daniel Hove's book on Mayan cuisine. I rate this book 4 stars for convenience and general appeal, but stop one start short to leave room for those inspired cookcooks that can be read in addition to cooked from.
