Doe the part that holds the actual iron detach? I don't need that & want it to close more flush to the wall.

Hi Foothill Woman. Yes, the iron holder can be left off! It attaches to the top of the frame through 2 hinge-like slots. So it is easy enough to simply leave out. Hope that helps!

When the ironing board is down, does it give about 4 inches as you push down? The one I bought is not stable at all. Wondering if it's defective.

I really like this ironing board. It doesn't give 4 inches, but I don't push down hard on it either. It has a slight give, but pretty level overall. I find it to be pretty sturdy.
