The Marlinspike Sailor [Second Edition, Enlarged]

A Must-Have For Every Mariner
Great book; very informational. HGS adds a personal aspect to every page with stories and easy-to-read descriptions of each knot. While the Ashley Book of Knots is more an encyclopedia of knots, this book selects some of the most common ones and gives a simple, yet detailed description with well-drawn, step-by-step images to give clear instruction of how to replicate what is shown. Mr. Smith adds personal stories, jokes, quotes, and real-world applications that make this much more than “a book on how to tie knots”. For the recreational yachtsman to learn or the commercial sailor to brush up on seamanship, this book is a must-have addition to any mariner’s library.

Good resource
One of my favorite marlinspike manuals. No real difference between first and this second edition

good book
This book was not quite what I was looking for but I was afraid of that when I ordered it. It is non-the-less a good book and I have no desire to return it.

I think the second edition is better than the first
I had the first edition. I think the second edition is better than the first. It's a great book.

Not an Instructional Text
The book has some interesting content, but it is by no means a primer on marlinspike seamanship.

Cheap cheap chap paper back
Had an original copy some decades ago, hard cover with a jacket quality paper etc.It got left on one of our boats and it was now time to purchase a new copy. I thought the paperback would be easy to handle.I was not expecting the very poor quality, this may as well be a news paper that you throw away at the end of the day.Very disappointed. One star strictly because the information contained in the book is valuable.I finally ended-up returning the copy.a
