Truth and Lies: What People Are Really Thinking

This is good to start with.
I do a lot of interviews and work place investigations, so I have much interest in a book like this. I have read better books; however, I would say that this is a good book to start with for people looking to do less serious investigations as to whether or not someone is telling the truth. There are better books and the authors even mention other authors or books by name if you want to study this subject further. The authors give lots of examples and very clearly show why you should give someone the benefit of the doubt or when you should be more suspicious. The book is easy to read and defines clearly any esoteric vocabulary that comes up. There are lots of little interesting tips that "pop up" through out the chapters and staying with modern times they go into Internet dating, chatting and all the other good stuff we use to communicate and fabricate information.

What you think you know about body language is probably wrong!
The true expert knows what’s possible in his or her field and what is hype. And, certainly, body language has been hyped. Fortunately, two of the world’s leading body language experts help to separate the wheat from the chaff in this practical, entertaining, and often eye-opening book.Accurate interpretation of body language cannot occur in the absence of context. For instance, do crossed arms indicate that the person is “closed” to us or that the room is cold? Bowden and Thomson provide an excellent system for understanding others’ body language in the context of the situation. They also call on us to examine what prejudices we might be bringing to a personal interaction and how they might affect our interpretation of body language. They want us to ask ourselves if other conditions in the room might be affecting our judgment. The authors apply their approach to three practical areas: dating, friends and family, and working life. Each chapter in each of these sections outlines a circumstance where understanding body language might help us to get a better handle on what is actually going on.For myself, I’m way past the stage in life where the dating section would be relevant, but I found many useful ideas and observations in that section that made it well worth reading despite its lack of immediate relevance to me.The “Truth and Lies” in the title refers not only to trying to understand what people are really thinking, but also to the truth and lies about body language itself that exist out in the world. There are many enlightening “body language myth busters” throughout the book that will disabuse you of notions that we’ve all somehow acquired about body language.Perhaps the main lesson of the book is that interpreting body language is not as simple as noticing a few things that other people do. Rather, we need a logical system to understand the complexities and context of body language in order to apply it to our interactions with others. For this, Bowden and Thomson are excellent teachers and guides, and their book is a masterful treatise for the lay reader.

It is in my library. Period
Mark and Tracey have come together with a real treat for those of us who enjoy human behavior, body language, and what people are really thinking. I was lucky to get an early release and it was such a joy to read something clever, interesting, and well written. As a writer I can tell you that a lot of work went into this book and it deserves our interest even if you are familiar with the literature. Mark is a great story teller and there is a lot of wisdom here from both writers. Read it just for the joy of reading or treat your mind to something useful with practical benefits. I did, I have. Love Mark Bowden's personality and his ability to interpret and describe! (In person.)
Mark's TED talk was amazing. As a result, I subscribed to his YouTube channel and also watch him on The Behavior Panel. (It's the highlight of my day when they release a new video.) I thought Mark's book would reflect his ebullience and, as a result, I would enjoy because Mark is so descriptive and entertaining in person.Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case so I don't know that I will ever get around to finishing the book. The SCAN discussions are very repetitive so I started skipping them almost from the beginning. It is almost impossible to visualize from their descriptions the difference between various emotions and behaviors. (Line drawings or something would probably help tremendously.) So, I am not enjoying and not learning much.

A bit disappointing
I was excited to read this book as I've frequently watched Mark Bowden on the Behaviour Panel on YouTube. I was a bit disappointed by this book, unfortunately! It relates substantially to dating scenarios and other hypothetical situations. I can see how body language may need hypothetical context but it wasn't what I was hoping for. The more academic/ classical slant that Mark Bowden has in his body language contributions weren't so prevalent here

Any book that includes the phrase ‘Easy, Tiger’ has got to be good
This is the 3rd of Mark’s books that i have read and have found them all to be easy to read and provide several takeaways that i use every day. I used to be a hands in pockets type of presenter until i read ‘winning body language’. Now that i can better understand the body language of those I’m talking to it will enable me change my approach to interactions on the fly. Well worth a read.

Practical and Entertaining - lots of insights
I loved the framework the book introduces. It repeats the same framework in various cases with particular nuances to show how it would apply. Yet it's not repetitive. The authors sprinkle side-notes of facts and expert opinions throughout. So you're constantly engaged.Of note: I did not read the book sequentially. I skipped to the chapters that I thought would most interest me. Then later came back to the ones that were less applicable to me. I found that to be a more useful way to approach the book.In the end, highly recommended!
