Identify and Draw North American Birds: A Field Guide for the Artist and Naturalist Spiral-bound – July 11, 2011

I really enjoy this book, but it's definitely more of a guide to coloring birds than drawing them. If you're a beginner at sketching/drawing, this will just be really frustrating, like those how-to guides that are like : first, draw a circle and a triangle, next, add small details, and now you have the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel!If you're a novice like me, though, you should have fun. I haven't had art classes since high school, so while my drawing is fair-to-middling, I don't know color theory or whatever artists need to know in order to make things appear to have depth when colored (yellow highlights! who knew?!). This book has all that stuff, which has been helpful to me, even outside the pictures within.Short version: If you can draw okish but want guidance on colored pencil work, knock yourself out, it's a ton of fun. If you're a beginner, start a little lower.

My painting friend had seen this book and was wanting one, So I purchased it for her... It is so nice I may have to borrow it back! It is an older book( written a while ago) but a book like this, never goes out of style. Yes, I would purchase it again. It makes a nice gift to anyone, the identification part was very helpful and how to draw was great as well.

It's a good reference book for drawing. It has all the information about birds including colors. Birds pictures are small in scale.

This book has a duel purpose. It serves as both a field identification guide for some common song birds and a how to draw the birds using color pencils. The book includes a very good description of basic techniques used for color pencils.

I purchased this product in thinking that it would show me how to draw birds. When I received it I realized that it didn't say anything on drawing, it said to photocopy that page or trace it and then color. It was just showing how to color them, and I was disappointed.

Really nice book with photos of the birds and their map of their habitat. I sketch of the bird is there to follow. Colorful. Book as advertised and received quickly.

Wonderful book. Has become my go-to how-to. Haha. Sample drawing lines a bit faint for me. The loose-leaf binding is great.

It wasn't quite as technical as I had hoped, but I still enjoyed it.

A really wonderful little book that aids in both bird identification and learning to draw our feathered friends.There are loads of different birds to draw and paint. You are given an outline at the start of each section, (you can either use this outline in the book or photocopy it which you can enlarge and even put on watercolour paper) and stage by stage you are then told what colour to use and where to paint on the bird.It's entertaining and educational as well as learning you the stages of painting with watercolour.There is a companion volume of the same type using butterflies as the central theme which is equally as enjoyable to do and learn from. Treat yourself and get them both for hours of fun filled learning and painting that gives great results and is virtually fool proof.

This book was a gift for my daughter who has enjoyed it very much indeed. I have also enjoyed it indirectly through looking at her drawings. My daughter's only criticism is that sometimes the steps are not broken down enough for her. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

アマゾンで本を手に入れるには危険を伴う。まず内容が実物を見て購入するわけではないからだ。値段も適正かどうか、という不安を覚えながらこの本も注文したのだが結論からいえば正解だった。著者のMichael Canasは非常に達者な画家であり、最上級の画家といえる。鳥の描き方の本が前から欲しかったわけだが、自分に満足させる作家にこれまで出会えなかった。動物の描き方も同様に満足を１００パーセント与える作家がいたわけではない。なぜ彼がほかの画家と比較しレベルが最上かというと、物体の捉え方、英語ではＤＥＰＴＨ、立体の深さといった意味か、その能力が高い。通常デッサン家とよく言うが、上には上がいるので、ダブィンチが説くように喝破したように一生かかっても人間の脳ではデッサンにおける情報量は多すぎるのでマスターはできないようです。したがって著者のMichaelの著作に触れられることは僕の能力を高めるには最適だった。つまりは、人間の、動物の、あるいは植物のデッサン、すべてのデッサンに適応するからだ。次に本誌を説明すると鳥の色鉛筆画でその点が星一つ減らした理由。せめて水彩までいってほしかったのに、当方としては。ガイドすると最初に鉛筆でデッサンをとりそれをトレスダウンする。さらに色鉛筆で着色する。色の明度の表現、また立体の影と深さの解釈がこれまでの類本にないとらえかたで、これも得した気分。サスガーMichaelと褒めちゃおう。本当は星６個あげても、おつりがくるよ。
