Very useful meter
I've used one of these for almost 3 years. I just bought another as backup, and I see that the price has dropped by over 75%!The meter is a handy size, has a great color display, reads very fast, and has useful features. The built-in app runs well on my Mac and generates useful reports for my doctor and myself. You'll need to charge this meter more often than you would replace a disposable battery in other types of meters, but charging is very easy and fast through a computer USB port or the supplied wall wart (since I'm seldom far from a computer, this works out well for me, and I don't recall ever using the wall wart -- one less dingus to carry around).Recently, I find that the battery isn't holding a charge for nearly as long as before, but that's to be expected in devices of this age that see this much use (and it's why I've socked in a replacement). The Contour strips are not particularly cheap, but you can save a lot if you know where to buy them (like a certain large online retailer named after a famous river, for example). As far as problems are concerned, I've experienced only minor ones. Occasionally I fumble the insertion of the strip and have to pull it out and try again. Also, sometimes I don't get enough blood into the strip and thereby waste the strip (but that's not really the meter's fault). The USB plug is buit into the meter and takes up far more space than simple USB cables, which can elbow other devices away from the teat (as it were), but Bayer includes a USB exension cable (if you choose to carry it around) to fix this problem.

Its About time
Its about time that one of the meter makers finally joined the twenty first century by introducing a meter with true USB connectivity. Not something that uses expensive adapters and antique technology, but something that lets you plug it directly into a USB port. My guess is that they have probably figured all along that seniors, who constitute a significant portion of diabetics (think Wilford Brimley and his diabetes supplies commercials)are far to technotardish to use a computer, much less use one to monitor their diabetes. Well guess what....there is a whole generation of people--myself being one of them--who not only appreciate the advantages and value of using a computer, but also base their buying decisions on the ability of manufacturers to give it to them. This blood glucose meter does just that. You stick your finger, you put the blood on the strip, and you get a reading.......just like every other meter on the market. But it takes the process a step further by letting you plug the meter into your computer and saving all the data there. My only criticism is that they oversell its ability to automatically bring up the software as soon as you plug it in. Yeah, it does that, but only if you have XP.......not Windows 7. Couple that with the fact that their website is very user-unfriendly, and you had best be fairly web-savvy and tenatious if you want to find the patch there that restores at least some of the features. Either that or call their tech support and have them give you the link. Bottom line is that they need to hire some software people who know how to work with the Windows 7 plug and play.Do I recommend this item? Absolutely! Just be aware that you may have to take a few extra steps if you want it to work to your expectations if you have W7 as your OS.

Excellent device, software really good just shy of great
I have been using this item for several days now and It is much easier to use than my Accu-Chek that I was given. The item is easy to carry in the provided pouch. It is easy to use (insert test strip, reads glucose levels quickly, and lets you easily select between pre meal and post meal testing). The lancet that comes with the item is much easier on my fingers than the one I had with my Accu-Chek. Bayers lancet provides a sample immediately (without having to squeeze my finger very much if at all) and the pain is almost non-existant (unlike my Accu-Chek one which hurt quite a bit). Now for the software. I love that it stores the information in a program so I can easily watch trends and see what happens when I eat certain foods and when I exercise. I just don't seem to be able to keep a written log so this is great. The charting could be a little better laid out and easier to read but overall it is quite good. I will be using this and printing out a chart for my next doctors visit so he can see how my medication is working (I have been diagnosed only about three months now). The part that I didn't like, and if corrected would give it a five star rating, is that on my Mac I have to start the program manually from the flash drive each time I insert it. I wish the software would install on my system and automatically start and download the readings when I plug in the unit. I don't know why others are having such trouble with using this on Macs but mine works flawlessly and except for this minor issue I just stated, it works without problems.I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants an easy to carry package, who wants to keep track of their readings in an easy to use software package (even Macs), and who wants less pain from their lancet. This is by far the best system that I have used to date and I really don't see any others out there that can beat it.
