Just follow the directions
I have about two dozen horse brasses, ornamental discs with designs molded in, that have been most difficult and time consuming to clean with regular liquid brass cleaner. When I saw this product advertised I thought the claims were too good to be true. Although I thought it to be pricey I ordered it anyway. I have just received it and put it to the test. Much to my delight, the brasses came clean easily and quickly, all finished in less time than it would have taken to clean just one using the old cleaner. Made a believer out of me.

Brassmate- It did not work on my antique brass pieces
The earlier reviewer stated it mildly when he wrote about Brassmate that “OK, so it’s not as easy as dipping it and it’s done….”. This product may well work on some metals. It was a disappointment when I tried it on antique brass. My rental apartment’s vintage kitchen has cabinet with brass handles that had not been polished in decades. Over the years they accumulated all they could from human hands. I removed them to polish with Brasso and found that to be not only labor intensive but also ineffective. After reading this cleaner’s product description I ordered it and followed the instructions for use. I poured Brassmate over the brass handles in a plastic bucket and waited for thirty minutes. Then I tried to clean them. Not only did the dirt not come off; the pieces turned dark and sticky. And my heart sank.I threw out the Brassmate, washed the brass handles in cold water and put them back on the cabinet. Now, apply Brasso and wrap a strip of strong cloth (e.g., bed sheet) once round the brass handle and buff hard like a shoe shine boy, pulling back and forth. And your dirty brass handles will come back to life. (Removing them to polish is not the best approach). Good old Brasso is cheaper and worked better for me. Who knows, Brassmate may work after soaking for days.

Works well on uncoated brass
I am pretty happy with this product. I am a hobbyist that frequently needs to clean brass parts. This is a good dip-and-brush cleaner for the light or medium tarnish that I usually encounter. It may work for heavily tarnished pieces too, I don't know. It is especially good for items that have small decorative nooks and crevices that can't be easily polished with a cloth. It is a real time saver on big pieces. My only disappointment is that items with a high gloss mirror finish are cleaned to a slightly satin finish. Further polishing is required to restore the mirror finish. One thing to remember is that almost all commercial brass has been coated at some time in its life with lacquers, waxes, patina treatments, etc. This is a non-abrasive brass cleaner that can remove dirt, grime, oil, and some light waxes, but it is not a lacquer remover. To clean the brass, the coatings must be removed first. Most regular polishing compounds have a mid abrasive that can help to strip off some coatings, but sometimes more drastic measures are required.

Works somewhat
Does not work 100%, still have to scrub quite a bit to get it 100% clean. It does help but it’s not worth the expense
