A must for the serious Bible reader
I'm not writing this comment for scholars but for anyone thinking of buying it, compared with, say, the Oxford, Cambridge, NRSV and NIV Study Bibles, all of which have introductory essays and notes. Its introductions to the sections (groups of books) are concise, balanced and reliable. The OT notes are particularly good on the history and the French Benedictines who produced the first edition of the JB in the 1950s know the topography of the Holy Land, because they live there, and there is a good deal of information of this kind which you won't find in the other Study Bibles. Textual amendments to the OT Scriptures are fully explained (in transliterated Hebrew).Disadvantages: 1) the notes are in very small type, though this does enable a lot of information to be contained within the page; 2) it's bulky and heavy and the pages are relatively thick. So a Bible for the study shelf, not one to take to church. The translation is good British English, sometimes verging on paraphrase (called "dynamic equivalence" in the jargon) and the text runs right across the page (i.e. not divided into columns, as most Bibles still are). Whereas NRSV and NIV strive to be as literal as is consistent with intelligibility, you can read the JB (like the REB) almost as though it weren't a translation at all. (I love Jezebel upbraiding Ahab in I Kings 21.7: "some king of Israel you make!").Some people might be put off because it's a Catholic Bible. Don't be. It's scholarly and objective throughout, an indispensable accessory for the serious Bible reader.

Superb product
An excellent translation that presents the word of God in clear accurate contemporary English. The study notes are of a higher critical vein which may not be to everyones taste, especially if they take all aspects of the bible literally. However if you are more open to the idea that the bible developed over a long period as an outworking of the Spirit of the Lord working through people then there is a lot here to think about. Recommended.

Stephen
I have ordered many copies of this Roman Catholic version of the Bible for different people. It is always the one I recommend to anyone who asks me which Bible to purchase. It is packed with detailed explanatory notes which are not too theologically orientated. Together with full-coloured maps and other information this is a must for all serious Bible readers.

Clarity!
Excellent comment accompanies the text. Don't expect the literary quality of King James's version.

A wonderful edition with full study notes and appendices. The standard edition is well worth the cost and it has a pleasant cover.

Damaged at the top of the Bible
The Bible looks good but the packaging is very bad, there is no hard packaging, due to which the top of the Bible is slightly damaged. For the price they should at least send in hard board case.
