Whilst the interview format is interesting, I found the book did little or nothing to extract the common elements from the experience of these CTOs into lessons or insights. That would have been useful, and perhaps what the meat of the book should have been. Many of the folks interviewed were also first CTOs in some fairly lofty companies, so this is a less hands-on-CTO relevant work (something that doesn't seem to exist)

Interview format showcases a range of personalities and tasks performed by CTOs
Interview format showcases a range of personalities and tasks performed by CTOs. As someone in a start-up, I was interested to compare and contrast the experience of a founder/CTO to that of a CTO in an established company. The first thought being, what does a CTO do and am I doing it? The second thought was to establish an end-point for what the CTO role could be. This book turned those questions around by just letting the CTOs talk. The insights are in the words of the CTOs, and importantly, in-between their words. The role of CTO is wide-ranging, depending on the industry, size and stage of the company, and personality. This is not a book of pre-digested facts and job-descriptions, but is a narrative that requires getting to know each of the subjects. That said, some people are more interesting than others. Many of the subjects seemed to have similar backgrounds, and perhaps, a little more variety would have been nice. I would recommend this to someone keen on the subject. It is an interesting approach and well thought-out.
