Info on a possum's tail as well as a tale
I find this to be a useful reference for tracks, even though I'm in a city-suburban setting [15,000 sq. ft. lot], especially in snowy weather. When shoveling the driveway the other day, I pointed out to a neighbor a set of tracks which were accompanied by what looked like a string or line dragged between the tracks. All this in a wavering line down the driveway. He suggested it might be an opossum. So I looked up opossum [Didelphis marsupialis], pp. 68-69, and read: "Trail is sloppy and footprints seldom register directly. Tail drag often shows." Yep. Tail drag shows. Since a couple of years ago I found a dead opossum [ not playing possum] in my gooseberry patch which, upon internal examination at a neighboring county park system, seemed to have died of old age. Since possums, the kind around here are called Virginia opossums, don't hibernate, I suspect this one was passing through from one street to another. Not all "wildlife" is in the woods. This tale is why I give the book five stars.

Good for hiking or hunting
I got it more for fun. It is a small book, easy to carry on walks. The information of both scats and tracks of animals is detailed well.I will use it with my grand children when we explore in the woods.

Nice small book, easy to carry.
I carry this book when hiking with the grand kids on the Superior Hiking Trail. Then we can verify the scat and tracks we run across, and see how they vary from near look alikes. The kids like it and they learn some details about the country they are hiking and resident animals.

makes hiking even more fun
We've already used this book a few times. What fun to try and figure out what went on the trail before us. Very interesting, clearly organized and presented - a fine book!

Fun for winter use
Great fun to use this during our long winters when wildlife watching is almost nil.
