The best currently available, but still too small
Jim Morekis knows this area, and his insights display an enthusiastic authenticity. His writing style is both engaging and witty, making this guide a pleasure to read. Jim understands that, though these deeply historic Southern "capitals" share some physical similarities, they are sprung from different mothers: Savannah is an English colonial city, formal and planned, while Charleston is a Caribbean city, organic and more akin to Nassau or Bridgetown. This is the best guide currently available for Charleston and Savannah, though I believe it is still too brief. Brevity aside, Jim's recommendations are spot on, and the listings he has chosen are sure to provide travelers with an exciting, authentic experience. There is coverage of sights, activities and listings for a variety of tastes and budgets, from the historian to the party animal. There are many sidebars and special interest sections (Literary Lark, African-American history, Civil War, etc...) that add diversity to the guide and make it more than a directory of tourist sights. The chapter on Savannah is particularly good, since this is the place where Jim is most in his element. The side trip to Beaufort is a nice addition, and Beaufort is a beautiful town well worth your time, but it consumes space in the guide that should be allocated to more from Charleston and Savannah.

Sometimes simpler may be better
I purchased this particular guidebook because several readers commented that they thought it was the best guide available. But I found it overly detailed in some topics and a bit awkward to navigate. The hotel suggestions were not terribly helpful and I ended up using my old standby trip advisor to find a perfect hotel and dining suggestion. Overall the book left me confused and uncertain about what I wanted to see in Savannah so I think I would have been better off with a simpler guide.

Much better than your average guide book...
An excellent guide to a wonderful area. I especially appreciated the historical background of the places I visited. Plan to go back for another visit and take this same book with me. Only big disagreement with the author was that I liked the movie: "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." The author thought it stunk. Other than that minor disagreement, this is an excellent book if you are planning to visit the low country of South Carolina or Georgia.

Interesting, useful, informative book about Charleston and Savannah!
This book had excellent information on both Charleston and Savannah! A friend and used it to make hotel reservations--we stayed at the Francis Marion in Charleston and the Brice in Savannah based recommendations in this book, and both places were outstanding! The Brice is only one year old, but it was included in this book. This book also had excellent information about restaurants and tours. We would have missed some important sights in Charleston and Savannah if we had not read this book before going to these places!

Best source I found to choose what to see in Savannah
We used this book to help decide what sites to see in and around Savannah. It was more complete and provided better information than other sources we used. It was far better and more complete than Frommers Portable Charleston & Savannah that I checked out of a library.I felt that the maps in the book were very useful and worked well in the format size of the book; it was easy to find free larger maps with more detail after arriving in Savannah.

Well Written, Informative, and Fun!
I looked at a large number of guides before a recent trip to Savannah, both in the library and bookstores. The older edition of this one was the best by far and I was delighted to find this new one on Amazon.Unlike many guides, not only is this informative—with sidebars on very interesting facts and customs omitted inmost guides—but it is extremely well written. It's the only guide you will need.
