Lifting Shadows The Authorized Biography of Dream Theater

This book is very detailed and well-researched, but will be of interest only to devoted fans. The newer edition brings the account into the Mangini period, but the narrative about Portnoy's traumatic departure and the band's quest to find a replacement feels a bit rushed to me. It would have been interesting to get Portnoy's take on the first DT album made without his involvement. I always imagine that Portnoy's reaction after his first listen was "Oh, crap. They can do this without me!"Anyway, this was a fascinating read for me. I'm grateful that the author chose to tackle the project with such dedication and that he had access to almost all of the primary sources.
